Owner/builder said it was legal, but now
claims a DMV insider has disclosed to him that the DMV has made a formal request to a federal agency to rule if his Beetle constitutes a threat to national security based on what could happen if it got into the wrong hands...

I dont see how it would be street legal, but then again that is california.
If i'm understanding this, It's street legal as long as he doesn't turn the jet on while on an public roadway. It still has the capabilities of running on it's original oem engine, and is street legal in that capacity only.
The only illegal street aspect I'm observing is the length of it beyond the rear bumper. It seems like it would need to have a red flag of some sort to warn drivers of the protrusion beyond the bumper, or, because it is a fixed item on the vehicle, that he should have a legal, crash tested and dmv approved extension of the bumper beyond the end of the jet engine, which, now that I consider it, yes, the vehicle would seem to be not street legal, considering.
I bet he has to really slam the trunk lid hard to get it to close. :D
Looks like a photochop to me. It has a wierd grainy image near the end compared to the ground. Just seems fake. Plus the shadow from the rocket is on the bumper but not on the ground,,,,
