    Warning Gator Crossing

This is not as interesting as a drug bust or a high speed pursuit,
but definitely not your everyday call, even in the south.
These picures were taken a few hours ago. Countybear and I
recieved a call about a man who had ran over a 7 or 8 foot
gator while driving down the road. The directions he gave
dispatch were not very good so we had to find the comp.
ouselves. The caller stated that the gator was still in the
roadway and he was afreid to get out of his vehicle. As you
will see the gator was by no means the largest in the swamp.
I located the caller about a mile down a dirt road from where
he told dispatch he was at. He hit the gator with his truck and
eventually the gator eased off into the woods allowing the man
to exit his vehicle. Unfortunatly, due to the animals injuries he had
to be put down by one of the local Wildlife agents.

I wouldn't have gotten out of my vehicle either, until someone with a gun was nearby.

A dead alligator is unfortunate? Do they serve some purpose that I'm not aware of?

I'm sorry the gator suffered, it can't help being what it is. It would have totaled anything other than a truck, though.

I guess I should have said "Unfortunatly for the gator."
I will say this, in thier defense of being a worthless creature, without them we would have a big problem with these.

Too those unawares of what that critter in the pics was,it is a freakin Nutria,or as we call them nutria rat, they reproduce like roaches (or rats) and desrtoy water ways foraging for food.Alocal sheriff (Jefferson Parish) used to have his troops out on canal banks at night with .22 cals and was paying something like 10 bucks a head. This parish is NOT rural but is a suburb of N.O. and you cant tell where one stops and the other begins.

This is kind of rehashing an old topic on another thread but people eat those things. (nutria)

There's a recipe some where on here for cooking one in a crock pot.

Why would the driver run it over? Based on the alligator's size, the driver could have just went around it and kept on going. Right, guys? Mav? Anyone?

Hell, if alligators eat nutria, then I am sorry it died. We have millions of nutria up here, but no gators. In fact, I'm not sure nutria have any natural enemies here (except me).

Gators have made a HUGE comeback here. I've seen as many as 15 in a night (unless I saw the same gators more that once) of bowfishing on a lake near Vicksburg. We see them all the time in the Ross Barnett Reservoir and the Pearl River. They have even instituted a limited (lottery) hunting season on them on the Reservoir.

    http://www.biggamehunt.net/sections/..._10050507.html

Out of 1,205 applicants from all over the state, 50 were randomly drawn by computer to participate in the historical event. After taking a mandatory class on alligators and alligator hunting, the permittees were allowed to try their luck at harvesting a gator in the areas north of Mississippi Highway 43 and south of Coal Bluff in Ross Barnett Reservoir and Pearl River.

Forty-one permittees participated in the hunt that spanned two weekends during Sept. Out of those 41 permittees, 30 alligators were harvested (64% males, 36% females) giving a 73% success rate.

The largest alligator harvested measured 11 feet and two inches, and the average length of all alligators harvested was eight feet and four inches.

There's a few restaurants locally that serve gator tail. Can't say I've tried it, but it's supposed to be good.
