Ask-A-Geek
As "Ask-A-Geek" was suggested for this section I'll kick it off by offering to help with questions about things I know about.
I'm a shadetree hobbyist geek, NCNE* certified. If you have a question about computers or software, feel free to hit me up. Cellphones/smartphones I don't know jack about. Mac topics I'm weak on, and home electronics aren't a strong suite either. I'm definitely not a well rounded geek, but I'll help where I can. My biases are toward security/privacy and using free (legitimate) software instead of buying more crap that doesn't get used.
There are better geeks than me here, just opening the conversation. Ask and a geek shall answer.

Since flash memory size has skyrocketed over the past few years, the higher capacity of the 2gb cards may be the culprit. If the capacity is the problem a small software update will probably fix you up. What model is your computer and OS (Windows XP/Vista)?
Is the card reader built into your computer or is it an add-on?

Ah good, there is a driver update. Let me know if it works.
Hewlett Packard bought/merged Compaq so when you go for Compaq support now you'll end up on a HP site.
If you go to this LINK and follow through V2000 -> Software and Driver Downloads -> Microsoft Windows XP -> Driver Storage (Media Card Reader Driver) you'll get to the page with the update and installation instructions. Since there are many versions of the V2000 series I recommend you start there and follow the link for your exact model.
I did look at a few models in the V2000 series and they were using the same card reader with the same drivers. Here's a direct link to the download/instructions page for the V2000 CTO. : LINK
Compatibility: Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Description: This package contains the driver for the Texas Instruments PCI 6xx1/7xx1 Cardbus (Media Card Reader).

OPERATING SYSTEM(S):
Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Windows XP 32-bit Home Edition

I have the same problem with 4GB cards but I just plug the camera into the computer and they read. No problems with 2GB cards.

Both Daps and her dad have bought new laptops in the past year and neither can hold a candle to this one.Several friends are amazed also as to how fast this one is.I got it shortly after Katrina and have had VERY minimal trouble from it,usually caused by me

I sure would like to get this card reader working for you. Using the camera as a reader as armsmaster270 said works, and buying an external card reader would do, but using the hardware you already own is my goal. Using the camera is a no cost solution though, good tip.
Downloading the software from the site is to update your machine to work with newer hardware. Your same laptop hardware, interfacing with newer peripheral (2gb SD card) hardware. The downloaded software updates what you already have.
I'll be back this afternoon for a moment and around tomorrow evening. The more detail you can give the better. I'm not exactly sure what where the process broke down. Did you run the software update from that site, and was it that gave you the error message? The text of the error message is helpful.
We'll get this working yet.
