Just watched the second episode. I actually liked it more than the pilot. It showed a bit more of what I call "carry-over", how the job effects the personal life, (and vice-versa) even though we don't like to admit it. This episode to me was more 'real' than the first by far from that aspect. The 'adulation' of the rookie after the shooting incident in the pilot episode was well-played too, especially the reactions.

I watched the first episode online at Southland - NBC Site. So far so good. I'm also catching up on episodes I missed of Harper's Island, Survivor and The Amazing Race.

I hope they continue to focus on the personal effects. I think thats what makes it real and makes it gripping. This show does not have to be "The Shield" to be successful. If it really gets the viewer inside the heads and emotions of the officers, then the show will carve out its own niche in TV cop shows.

There was an old show that got me interested in law enforcement as a kid that was exclusiviely about uniform officers named Adam-12 that is available on DVD.
I think it was the first show to focus on patrol officers as main characters. The names of the two main characters appear in my user title.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

I liked the first episode better than the second.... I think the second lacked the comic relief other than the bean bag part. I really do not like the short-haired blonde wife character...I think she needs Valium or Lithium or something!

Well that might sell it for me right there. I've basically avoided it because I can't separate coppin' as a profession and cop shows on tv, and they normally piss me off. But Third Watch was AWESOME...at least in the earlier years. Last 2 years of the show it got shitty.

I watched the first half of episode 3 while getting ready for work. I liked the twist of Cooper having an ex-wife. That probably has some people wondering what the heck is up with him. I have a couple cop friends in the same boat. I watched the end after I got home from work. I was disappointed that they have Cooper popping pills he gets from his ex-wife. It looks like they are trying to set up that he's got something wrong with him that he's maybe not wanting anyone to know about. But I wish they wouldn't have to make him be the gay guy into taking pills. I hope that isn't a sign that the show is going to start falling into more of the stereotypes. The only thing I can think of now that would be an o.k. reason for the pill popping would be if he had cancer or something like that. But then he would not need to get someone else's pills. It's not that hes on pills that I have a problem with, it's that hes taking someone else's drugs. I'd rather see him taking his own pills to help deal. I don't know, I guess we will see where this leads. At least it was cool to see the a-hole cop Dewey get his. That was hilarious. God I want to punch him through the t.v.!

It is perhaps one of the plethora of reasons police divorces are so prevalent.
And perhaps he's not gay, he's bisexual.
