    Looking for a new laptop

I'm looking for a new laptop. I currently have a dell latitude with a 20 gig hard drive and 512 megs of ram.

I am looking to spend no more than $600. Any techy person out there willing to steer me in the right direction?

You need this to run the internet once you and Terminator purchase it, right?

Refurbished laptops from Dell's website are the least expensive ones I know about. Get a 3-year warranty and they will fix or replace anything that goes wrong. I've bought a lot of laptops from them, and found that they worked very well and provided good warranty service (if you don't mind talking to customer service agents in Third World countries). Here's the link to the outlet for Dell's refurbished computers. You can get a pretty good computer from them for $600 or less:

I am open to this. But I think that for the price you can get a good New laptop for the price.

Dell is selling current iteration Core 2 laptops under $600.

I'm very happy with my Inspiron 1720 - I think they have changed the name of the line now.

Find out if your agency or State has a gov account with them, it can save you hundreds.

Would buying it via department cause problems with it being for personal use?

Also what do you think of compaq's?

I had it shipped to my department, and my IT folks helped me with the account number. Dell expects you to buy it - it's just another way for them to make money like Apple giving computers to schools to hook the kids on their stuff.

I know little about Compaq other than they are now really Hewlett Packard.

Do you have a screen size preference? How many hours of battery life do you find acceptable? Is this going to be used at home most of the time and plugged in or toted around a lot (weight and durability record comes into play more then - and maybe a small SSD would be better than a big HD at the same cost).

Yes, you can if you prefer a new laptop. The main advantage of buying a new laptop instead of a refurbished one from Dell for me was that I could have a new laptop custom-built and spend more on stuff I actually needed (RAM and hard disk space) and less on stuff I didn't need (graphics, sound, screen, etc.). But if I could find the laptop with the the configuration I wanted from the Dell outlet, I usually bought the refurbished laptop instead of a new one because the refurbished laptop had more RAM, hard disk space, etc. than a new one for the same price, and were usually no worse than new ones (most are "refurbished" only because other customers returned them after trying them out for just a few weeks under the very generous return policy, so they are almost like new). If anything went wrong it was fixed under the warranty, and most often they just mailed me new parts to replace the old parts.

Solid State drives put it out of his price range almost immediately.

I would like something with 2-3 hours of battery atleast. This will be used at home 60% of the time.

    Dell Vostro 1510
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB Ram
    250GB hard drive
    8X DVD+/RW drive
    $519

Spend another $50 to upgrade the memory a little. They drop it to $499 if you buy it online.

$549, might come out a little over 600 after tax and shipping but it'll be close. This is basically what I bought last week but I added a few upgrades.

Yup yup - don't buy any more than 4GB of memory - Vista won't address it properly.

You will never be unhappy if you spend extra on a bigger hard drive or better graphics.

That system Xiphos has there is a good setup for the buck.

Dell sometimes has a free shipping deal.

    Just as a comparison :

    Lenovo G530 - 4151X2U - $435 : Lenovo.com

    Intel® Pentium® Dual Core T3400 processor ( 2.16GHz 667MHz 1MB )
    Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
    Intel Integrated Graphics 4500
    2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
15.4 " WXGA TFT with integrated camera LCD Glossy 1280x800
    160GB 5400
    DVD Recordable (Dual Layer)
    6 Cell Lithium-Ion

CPU is a tad faster, but memory is slower, lower graphics features and has a smaller HD.

    Another to compare to :

Toshiba - Model: L305-S5944 - $399 BestBuy Local pickup may be available?

    # Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core processor T3400
With 667MHz frontside bus, 1MB L2 cache and 2.16GHz processor speed.
    # 2GB PC6400 DDR2 SDRAM
    # Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support
    # 15.4" WXGA TFT-LCD widescreen display 1280x800
    # 250GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
    # Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M
    # 4-in-1 bridge media adapter
    # 3 high-speed USB 2.0 ports
    # Weighs only 5.5 lbs. and measures just 1.5" thin
    # Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Edition operating system

Again the 2.16ghz, but ram speed/HD/graphics again. Personally I don't care about graphics on a laptop, but I use mine as a glorified transistor radio.

Back in the day I worked on a few Compaq's and I was never impressed with them. That may have changed the last few years but the experience was bad enough I'm still wary...

Slower front side bus speed, shared video memory, and LightScribe drive.

    Cheapo, stay away.

The Dell is the better machine so far, IMHO.
