    Boost Mobile to Nextel?

Does anyone here know if the Boost Mobile prepaid walkie-talkie phones are interoperable with Nextel Direct Connect? I think they ought to be...they are virtually the same phones (I am looking at the Motorola i355), Boost uses the same network (just under the prepaid brand)you can even use Boost SIM cards in Nextel phones with limited capability.

I used to have a Sprint personal cell and my old PD issued Nextels with unlimited DC. All of my close friends work at other PDs that issue Nextels with unlimited DC, so it used to be a really easy and cheap way to communicate. I also had lots of other contacts, both in LE and not, that I used DC with. My new PD doesn't issue Nextels to the line cops though, and I really miss having the DC. All the Sgts, etc. have them issued and use them more than their personals, so it would be nice to get ahold of people at work with DC too.

I thought about going back to Sprint and picking up their cheapest rugged Nextel and just signing up for a DC-only plan. I looked into it and their unlimited DC plans are $30 bucks a month. That isn't horrible, except I was hoping to make some limited calls on it too (i.e. to our Records, Dispatch, etc) when I'm at work so I can leave the personal cell in the car. Not a whole lot, since we still have Nextel phones in the car (big yellow and grey construction-type ones) I can use for lengthy work stuff. Just a few minutes (2-5) a day at MOST. The fewest minutes you can add to the Nextel plan is 500 at an additional $30. Fuck that. The per minute rate without a plan in place? $0.40 a minute! Fuck that. That's 4 bucks for a ten minute call. What a joke.

So I am thinking about picking up a Boost phone. I can buy the same phone with Boost for $50 that I can get with Sprint for $20+a two year contract. That's another reason I am reluctant to go back to Sprint because I have a personal Verizon BlackBerry which I LOVE that I use for everything else, so going to Sprint means another contract because I kicked them to the curb last year. Boost has no contract, so I can ditch it whenever I feel like it or if I get appointed to some position that provides a Nextel in a year or three, i.e. SWAT, PIO, etc. Plus our HQ building had Nextel repeaters built into the walls everywhere when it was first built a couple years back, so the Nextel (and Boost I think) signals should be excellent when I'm at work, in the holding cells, etc., wheras my Verizon has none. That will be handy for the occasional phone call. Plus, my district partner and I are pretty proactive, and coordinate a lot over Nextel. Fine if we're in the car, but it sucks to stuff the big rugged yellow one in my pocket when I'm out on foot.

Then, with Boost's "basic" plan, unlimited DC is $1/day, ONLY on the days you use it. So if I don't use it on a particular day, I won't get charged. So the max I'll be charged a month is $30 if I use it every day, which I probably won't...more like $20 a month. If I want to make the odd voice call, it's only $0.10 a minute...I'll probably use only about 20 minutes a month in that way...$2.00 for that is a fair deal. The basic plan doesn't include any of the stuff the basic Sprint plan does like web, texting, etc (they're all per-minute or message charges), but that's fine because I won't use any of that shit. That's what the blackberry is for. The Boost will be for DC only and the odd work-related call.

So, anyone have any experience that will convince me not to go this route?

I know the Boost phones are compatible with Nextel, its the same system. Boost has an unlimited everything plan for $50.00 a month. Thats cheaper than any Sprint plan out there. I too have been looking at going this route. Im currently with Sprint and it makes no sense to me that I can go to a monthly plan and pay less than with a contract service.

I went ahead and did it. Just got back from the Sprint store. It is fully compatible with Nextel Direct Connect. It's a good decision so far.

BigDawg, I agree. When it comes to legacy Nextel service, the only reason Sprint charges more is the name. Just remember that with Boost, though, you are using Nextel's voice network exclusively, which blows for the most part in comparision with the newer networks. Even Sprint makes their Nextel's hybrid now, so they use Sprint's voice and data service (which is technically on par with Verizon...same system), and only uses the Nextel network for walkie talkie.

I switched my phone to boost, and I slapped one of their sim cards into my i580 phone and it works fine. If you are a big texter, boost is not for you though. They are SSSSSLLLLLLOOOOOWWWWW to send and receive your text messages. I have had mine for a month now and for what I use it for, it has not been too bad a deal at all.
