Los Angeles Police Department - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The LAPD hired the first female police officer in the United States in 1910, Ms Alice Stebbins Wells.[61] Since then, women have been a small, but growing part of the force. The highest ranking woman in the department today is Assistant Chief Sharon Papa, who came to the LAPD as a Commander from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Transit Police Department in 1997.[63] Chief Papa was the last Chief of Police from the MTA, and is now in charge of the Office of Support Services. [64]
