Shields Up!
ShieldsUp!
This is a great website. It has great explanations about computer and internet security. It will also scan your computer and point out any security problems.
I was very happy to find my connection was well secured.
Well worth the reading and scanning.
If this is interesting, check out this guide for more port scanning: http://lifehacker.com/198946/how-to-...security-holesThat which does not kill me, better start fucking running.

Steve Gibson makes security easier and fun to think about. Gibson being the G in GRC.com link to Shields UP! above.
He also does a heck of job of explaining things on his Security Now show. While it isn't for everyone, there's recently been a sweet multiple part overview on how computers work, starting at the earliest basic hardware components and going forward. If you're someone who likes to know how your tools work it might be of interest and it doesn't require you already know X Y and Z to join in. Series begins at Episode 233 - and hey, to avoid a lot of stuff you likely won't be interested in skip ahead and start 34 minutes into the show.
Let's Design a Computer (part 1)
To understand the advances made during 50 years of computer evolution, we need to understand computers 50 years ago. In this first installment of a new Security Now series, we design a 50 year old computer. In future weeks, we will trace the factors that shaped their design during the four decades that followed.

I've been using that site for years. I always check it out whenever I put together a new computer, install a new firewall, or use a different browser. It's been a fantastic resource!

Gibson is a very useful resource, been using that in my toolkit as well. I got into his work when he exposed some issues with Plug and Play. Some folks think he was blowing that one up a bit, but I think he had a point.

The site is busy, which is very rare for them, as Steve explains. You'll have to try back later. The views expressed in the above post are the sole opinion of the author and do not reflect any official position by the author's employer and/or municipality.
