Haha! I guess I was thinking about the original song lyrics/original recording and they just doesn't seem to go with trendy backpacks.

    BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN
    Harry McClintock, circa 1890

One evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fires were burning,
Down the track came a hobo hiking,
And he said, Boys, Im not turning.
Im headed for a land thats far away
    Besides the crystal fountains.
So come with me, well go and see
    The Big Rock Candy Mountains.

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
Theres a land thats fair and bright,
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night.
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines every day
And the birds and the bees
    And the cigarette trees
    The lemonade springs
    Where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
All the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs.
The farmers trees are full of fruit
And the barns are full of hay.
    Oh Im bound to go
    Where there aint no snow
    Where the rain dont fall
    The winds dont blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
    You never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol
    Come trickling down the rocks.
The brakemen have to tip their hats
And the railway bulls are blind.
    Theres a lake of stew
    And of whiskey too
You can paddle all around it
    In a big canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
The jails are made of tin.
And you can walk right out again,
As soon as you are in.
    There aint no short-handled shovels,
    No axes, saws nor picks,
    Im bound to stay
    Where you sleep all day,
    Where they hung the jerk
    That invented work
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.
    .
Ill see you all this coming fall
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

    .
The punk rolled up his big blue eyes
And said to the jocker, Sandy,
Ive hiked and hiked and wandered too,
But I aint seen any candy.
Ive hiked and hiked till my feet are sore
And Ill be damned if I hike any more
To be buggered sore like a hobos whore
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

I thought I was strange because that song is creepy to me. Glad to see you agree.

I'd never heard the song before, the lyrics remind me of what my Grandmama would sing - no surprise, she'd be 104 now. She would have omitted the bit about being buggered sore like a hobo's whore, but sung with relish the bit about hanging the jerk that invented work. Before reading the lyrics the commercial just kind of struck me as a dim echo of Lord of the Flies.

The song is from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou." I don't recall the final verse though! I'm thinking that was an "add-on."
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

OK, so I looked it up, and it is creepy!

Before recording the song, McClintock cleaned it up considerably from the version he sang as a street busker in 1897. Originally the song described a child being recruited into hobo life by tales of the "big rock candy mountain". Such recruitment actually occurred, with hobos enchanting children with tales of adventure called ghost stories by other hobos. In proof of his authorship of the song, McClintock published the original words, the last stanza of which was:
The punk rolled up his big blue eyes And said to the jocker, "Sandy, I've hiked and hiked and wandered too, But I ain't seen any candy. I've hiked and hiked till my feet are sore And I'll be damned if I hike any more To be buggered sore like a hobo's whore In the Big Rock Candy Mountains."

I'd looked it up after hearing it in "O Brother, Where Art Thou," and that's when I found out about the origin. If the LL Bean commercial used a later version of the song or a version recorded by someone else it probably wouldn't have caught my attention as being creepy.

No shit I had to stop watching after 1:23.

On a different note, I can't tell if this commercial is funny or creepy either...

And since we're talking about Big Rock Candy Mountain, I have to include the following commercial:

Damn commercial has everything. Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, Vida Guerra, Brooke Burke, a hot cowgirl hula-hooping an onion. (Jenna, make sure your Google filter is set on Moderate when you look up Brooke or Vida...otherwise you'll see some very adult images)
