    App Permissions on Mobile Devices

Just some FYI ( some will already know), but many mobile apps are asking for permissions that they do not need. You can guess the usual offenders such as Facebook. The latest update wants to be able to read any text you send our receive in addition to always being able to see your location. If you gotta keep this garbage, access it through your device's browser.

CyanogenMod has built in privacy features that spoof information to apps. You can select each app you want spoofed. The system tells the app you have no contacts or your GPS is off etc. I've been using the feature for a couple months.

Check out CyanogenMod | Android Community Operating System to see if the new loader is compatible with your phone. It's the easiest way to root and install a third party ROM now. If that still makes you nervous the Oppo N1 phone will be available in the US December 24 with CyanogenMod already installed. More phones to follow.

Your phone is supported by the CyanogenMod installer. The instructions look pretty straight forward. If you can install apps, connect your phone to your computer, and install windows programs you should be able to handle it.

As a followup to my above post, CyanogenMod calls the feature Privacy Guard. If you are running a newer version of CM you can use it to block Location, Reading Contacts, Reading Call Log, Reading Calendar and SMS/MMS permissions.

Plan on the phone being completely wiped including the internal SD. Right now you should connect to the computer and copy off all your photos and music etc. You could just let it sit and chug away at the backup while you are waiting.

Is there an easy way to back everything up? I have it set to back up to my gmail account.

Spent today reinstalling my apps. This could have been avoided, but in hind sight, this let me clean out some junk I wasn't using anyway. No issues so far. Being able to us my phone with the same features as my Nexus 10 is great. Again, this is worth it just for the privacy settings and dumping bloatware. My antutu benchmark test improved by over 3000 points in performance rating from 7,xxx to 10,xxx.

Wow... just got asked to update Facebook. Not only did they want to read my text messages, they wanted to access and change my wi-fi settings. I don't think so...

I might have to do CM on my electrify m. Except I don't Facebook, MySpace, instagram, I don't tumblr and I'm not a twatter... err twitter. I basically play scrabble and YouTube.

The only apps that now know where I am are shopping apps and navigation. Little shield icon appears on notification bar when I'm using apps that I marked to block personal info. Including tapatalk.

For those of you that have never ever done anything like this......I was one of you. I have never modded a phone in my life till last night. I could have completed it in an easier way like I stated above with the app back up. However, it is all very much worth it. My phone is faster, has more options, isn't selling my data by data mining, and I can make this phone do just about whatever I want it to do. I have been exploring all the new little options all day. The Galaxy Nexus is no longer getting factory updates. With Cyanogen I get the newest stable versions of Android even faster than I would when stock. No more waiting on Verizon. This was nearly painless, and if there are any Uh Oh moments, there is enough help on here to get you through it.

Check and see if your device is officially supported by Cyanogen here: Devices - CyanogenMod

Look for the link that says "show all devices".

So I decided to do this and no build for the Electrify m. My phone has developed an issue anyway that shall probably require replacement. I'm considering going without a smart phone.

You can do it but you need to do it manually. You'll have to back up your APN information and then follow the directions for the RAZR M Developer Edition phone.

Yeah I saw that on us cc website. I'm nervous that might be outside my abilities. I actually just discovered I can upgrade my phone. My current one locks up and I have to reset it at least once daily. I don't think cm will fix that so I'm gonna replace it with the galaxy s4. And I may consider cm for that. We shall see. I was thinking of doing the cm install on my electrify after I replace it. If I fail, I'm not really out anything

If you can upgrade and get a new phone the old one is a good one to experiment with and learn what you're doing. Don't want to brick your daily driver.

It's not difficult to do. You just need to read up and make sure you follow the instructions step by step and have an understanding of what to do if you encounter a common problem.

Common problems aren't my real fear; there are published solutions generally. My fear is the uncommon problem...
