    Officer involved shooting

ATWATER, Minn. (AP) - The police chief of Atwater in west-central Minnesota shot and wounded a man whose minivan had crashed into the chief's car, authorities said.

Police Chief Reed Schmidt radioed the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Dispatch Center at about 9:10 p.m. Tuesday to say that someone had struck his squad car, Sheriff Dan Hartog said.

"At that point Reed and that guy got into an altercation" that led to Schmidt shooting the man, Hartog said.

The man, whose name was not released, was being taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. His condition was unknown.

Schmidt, who also was injured, was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. He was in fair condition Wednesday. The nature of his injuries were not immediately released.

Hartog said he has asked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to help in the investigation. He would not comment on details until more investigating could be done.

I hope Chief Schmidt is ok. He's a good guy from what I've heard.

ATWATER, Minn. - The Atwater police chief was released from a Willmar hospital on Thursday, two days after getting into a fight while on duty with a 23-year-old Atwater man that ended with a gunshot.

The man, Brian Detlefsen, faces second-degree assault charges. Officials allege he started the confrontation on a city street by driving his vehicle into Chief Reed Schmidt's cruiser several times about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Kandiyohi County Sheriff Dan Hartog said Schmidt fired one shot into Detlefsen's abdomen in self defense. Schmidt suffered a serious eye injury in the incident.

Detlefsen was in critical condition at the Hennepin County Medical Center on Thursday. The chief was released from Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Schmidt said he couldn't discuss the details of the case since it was under investigation by the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, but he said that appreciated all the support he's been getting from the community.

Detlefsen and Schmidt had crossed paths before Tuesday.

Schmidt issued citations to Detlefsen twice in 2005. Atwater Police Officer Paul Schmidt, who is Reed Schmidt's son, also issued a citation to Detlefsen in November 2004, according to Kandiyohi County court files.

Detlefsen also had minor run-ins with other peace officers in the area. KARE-TV reported that he was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia.

    ***UPDATE

A grand jury has cleared a Minnesota police chief of any wrong-doing, more than two months after he shot and wounded a man who attacked him. There will be no indictment against Chief Reed Schmidt.

After weeks on administrative leave and then desk duty, Atwater Police Chief Schmidt is back on patrol duty. He's the head of a three-person police department and once traveled to the Middle East to help train Iraqi police officers.

Schmidt says even after 30 years as a police officer, he feels like a rookie again.

"One of those days when you start the new job, butterflies in your stomach," says Schmidt.

Schmidt says he's been looking forward to hitting the streets again.

"When I'm training a new officer, I say there's no such thing as routine patrol," says Schmidt. "Every once in a while something happens."

And that's exactly what happened one night - last November.

Schmidt was in his squad car, on patrol around a local park. He saw a van and a driver Schmidt thought wanted to talk to him. Instead - the driver made a U-turn and sped up - heading directly for the back of Schmidt's car.

"I was rammed from behind," says Schmidt. "It was a large impact. It threw me back and forth. My canine partner Max was completely knocked out."

Authorities say that driver was Atwater resident Brian Detlefsen, a man who had been in trouble before. He was about to do something Schmidt, a seasoned law enforcement officer never expected.

"The rest of my life changed at that point," says Schmidt.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Kandiyohi County, authorities say Detlefsen began to attack Schmidt, hitting him in the head and face and scratching at his eye. Chief Schmidt says he tried to fight back.

"He threatened to kill me and my family. It was at a point where I knew my life was in danger."

And so, Reed Schmidt made what he calls a tough, split-second decision - a decision to save his own life.

"I removed my weapon from my holster and I fired one round."

The bullet injured Brian Detlefsen - ending the attack.

"It happened so fast. There's a lot of fear there, but I don't think you even have time to think of the fear," says Schmidt.

Today, Chief Schmidt has scars from that night. He lost sight in his right eye, but hasn't lost his love of the job. He's back on the streets of Atwater, with his loyal partner Max and the same rookie attitude he had three decades ago.

"There's no anger. I feel a loss for what happened to me. I'm just thankful I'm alive. It's all part of my job. I'm a police officer."

Chief Schmidt says he looks forward to retiring from the Atwater Police Department in a couple of years to enjoy more time with his family.

The man who attacked Chief Schmidt, Brian Detlefsen, has recovered from his injuries and remains in jail. He faces several charges ranging from attempted murder to assault.

Authorities don't know what motivated the attack. Last November, Detlefsen's family told KARE 11 he had recently been diagnosed with mental illness. He is currently undergoing a court-ordered psychological evaluation.

It is terrible that the Chief lost one of his eyes in this incident.
