60,000 Bags of Heroin Seized in N.Y.

Sixty-thousand bags of heroin worth a total of $1 million (euro760,000) have been seized and eight people have been arrested after they left a house that was dedicated to drug packaging, police said.

"Sixty-thousand less hits of heroin will be used today," Drug Enforcement Administration agent John Gilbride said Tuesday.

The bust in the city's Bronx borough was a result of an investigation involving the DEA, the New York Police Department, state police and Westchester County law enforcers.

Law enforcement officers followed a driver on Monday night from a Hartsdale, New York, home to the Bronx, where he retrieved a plastic bag from the trunk of his car, the DEA said. The officers found two boxes containing about 60,000 individually packaged transparent baggies of heroin, weighing more than 40 pounds (18.14 kilograms), and arrested him, the agency said.

About 45 minutes later, seven more people made a hasty exit from the Hartsdale home in a minivan but were stopped by law enforcement officers two blocks away, the DEA said.

Inside the home, which had security cameras at all four corners, police found thousands of empty glassine envelopes, 10 respirator masks and tools used to mix, cut and grind heroin, the DEA said.

The defendants, charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, were being held at the Westchester County Jail.
