14-year-old Ohio boy shot after teens targeted SUV
The Associated Press
Updated: 9:44 a.m. ET Dec 3, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A 14-year-old boy who was throwing eggs at cars along with two other teenagers was shot and killed by someone who had been in a sport utility vehicle that was hit, police said.
Danny Crawford was killed by a gunshot wound to his upper body, Franklin County Coroner Brad Lewis said. He died in an alley on the city’s west side early Saturday, authorities said.
The teens were throwing eggs at cars when an SUV that was struck chased them, Detective Tim Huston said. The vehicle stopped and several gunshots were fired, he said.
Police were looking for the shooter, who fled in the SUV, Sgt. Dana Norman said. The SUV believed to be involved was found a short time later near where Crawford died.
The other teens were not hurt, police said.

That is an obvious danger of annoying people you don't know you might find someone who is a little tapped.
A little excessive to shoot the kid though.

Around Thanksgiving I was driving home late (maybe 2am) - got into the city, roads are deserted. I see a man on the sidewalk who appears to be watching me approach. I move over to the interior lane to keep plenty of room - road's empty so why not give more distance in case a drunk falls off the sidewalk?
As I pass, the guy jumps off the sidewalk and starts crossing at a run. Apply brakes, cheat as far left as dividing island allows, hope guy doesn't dive in front - and then he throws his beer cup at my car and takes off. No damage, empty party cup that bounces off the window.
SO....what should I do? (anyone up for a mini Scenario and Situation?) This is what I did
I'd slowed to just about a stop by then. I move back into the outside lane, pull up into a business driveway about 20 yards down the road. Look back and see idiot running into the house and a few of his little buddies standing on the front yard. Leave lights on, turn on flashers, exit vehicle leaving door ajar in case I need to get back in quick.
Walk about halfway over - close enough I can converse with the guys in the front yard without shouting, but far enough away I judge I can make it back to before them car if they turn out not to be chatty type.
Talk to one for about a minute while watching others - find out his first and last name, try to get name of idiot, try to get homeowner's information from him (claims he doesn't know either). Assures me this won't happen again - all the while brave cup thrower peeks out the curtain. Guy I'm talking to is a little drunk, very apologetic and probably regretting offering up his name. (If he made it up he's quick) He's walked closer during conversation - but others have stayed back. Get one last "honest man, this won't happen again" out of him, shake his hand and tell him I'll be on my way as soon as he picks the cup up out of the street. He does, I leave.
It'll surely happen again, but maybe not that night. Hopefully new friend Kaleb will behave rest of evening anyway.
Go home, check email, go to bed.

Little excessive to shoot him, although it's what I would FEEL like doing myself. A little butt kicking by the anonymous citizen who fled might be worth it tho....

Stop and punch the kid for egging your car - misdemeanor.
Shoot them down in the street - felony.

yea, you can expect someone to say it was stolen.....just like drunk drivers do.
Here it gets worse with kids throwning bricks/rocks/whatever they can find from the bridges over the interstate..no one dead that I know of yet........and of course there is a large outbreak of hitting mail boxes with base ball bats now too.......60 hit in one night.Any Post I make is my opinion only!

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

Well, I would say the shooting is a teeny bit excessive. If someone egged my car it would take great restraint, not to beat someones ass. I bet his buddy's have learned a lesson though.

Bad guy: "Yeah, uh, my car was stolen like two days ago."
Dispatcher: "okay, sir, why didn't you report this earlier?"
Bad guy: "yeah, uh, well, uh, I thought it might return on its own... so I need an officer to come out here right now... uh, someone might go and do something bad with the car and, uh, I don't want blamed for it"
Same scenario, different players.
Still, I bet it was the last time the remaining kids ever egg a car.

There's been some fatalities in Florida from rocks thrown from overpasses. Imagine dropping a 5 or 6 pound rick and it hitting squarely in the windshield of a 65-70mph car? Killed the female driver instantly.

I think if the shooter gets a reaaaal good lawyer he could beat it on a claim of self-defense.

Naw, probably wouldn't fly.

I believe the shooter was way out of line here. He could have accidentally struck the kid down the street, who was bashing a mailbox at the time, and killed him instead. He should have just run over the egging bandit with his car, and claimed the punk ran out in front of him. Or claimed that another kid, while holding a flaming paper sack full of cow crap, had pitched the egg-wielding kid into the street, in front of him. I gotta go now. Some punk just threw toilet paper into my trees.

Always a loon ready to give us gun owners a bad rep...oh wait, we already have one! Of course its excessive. I do like to indulge my fantasies though. I doubt those kids will quit entirely. They see the shooter as totally wrong and themselves as harmless youts just having fun. They'll just use better concealment from now on.
