At least 3 of missing family of 4 found alive after more

Friends Continue Search for Family Missing More Than a Week
Kim Family Vanishes While Taking a Trip Through Pacific Northwest

    By NEAL KARLINSKY
Dec. 4, 2006 - James Kim lives and breathes the latest portable gadgets, and as a result, is always in touch, his family says.

Somehow, though, a week ago, the 35-year-old technology writer, his wife, and their 4-year-old and 7-month-old daughters dropped out of sight while driving through a remote part of southwestern Oregon.

In the last 24 hours, friends of the Kims have flown in from across the country to conduct their own search.

"We're going around hanging up fliers, talking to local businesses, talking to people along the route," said Jason Zemlicka, a friend of the family.

James Kim is a familiar name in the tech world.

As a senior editor at CNET.com, he makes a living reviewing the latest high-tech gadgets and trends.

    Driving Through Bad Weather

The family of four was returning from a Thanksgiving road trip from their home in San Francisco to Seattle, and were driving through Oregon when they disappeared.

Their last-known phone call was to an oceanfront lodge a week ago during terrible weather.

Kim's wife, Kati, called to say they would be late.

"Kati called, said they were gonna press on, and yes, they would be here," said Terri Stone, the innkeeper of the lodge.

    They never arrived.

Police say witnesses and a credit card receipt put the family's last-known location at a Denny's restaurant in the small town of Roseburg, Ore.

Friends have concentrated their efforts in this area, even renting a helicopter to search the vast forest filled with windy roads, rugged terrain, and often spotty cell phone service.

They've also gone online, posting their own stories and videos on YouTube in the hopes that someone will help find the lost family of four.

"I am worried about my brother and his wife, but it just seems really unfair. Um, that the girls are there, and just maybe suffering," said Kim's sister Eva.

The brand new update to this story as of about ten minutes ago is that the mother and two daughters were found alive today on a remote Oregon road. It seems they suffered an accident. Apparently the father set off two days ago on foot to find help, but they haven't found him yet.

News tonight indicated searchers had found a pair of pants and a backpack. Pants were Kim's unk about the backpack. Speculation was either he's trying to leave a trail of items to indicate his path or he's hypothermic and not lucid.

Yeah, I wonder what the story on the pants really is. But if he had left his pants because he had become so hypothermic that he was disoriented and/or felt warm, then how much further from that spot could be possibly have traveled before collapsing? I assume they searched that immediate radius pretty damn carefully.

It's such a shame that if he had just stayed with the car two days longer, the entire family would be safe and together now. But after seven days, I think I would've made the same decision. Of course, he intended to return to the car later that day..

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. I used to watch James Kim on ZDTV/TechTV all the time back in the day.

A couple tweekers got lost in a snow storm last year around Lincoln. They kept calling 911 and reporting people stealing hubcaps from trees and such until they froze to death. What makes me think of them though is the girl seemed to be less chemically affected, and over the course of calls seemed to be getting closer to right - but when the cold overtook her she went for a swim. Hope they don't find a body down river today

Here's a couple tips for those that visit Oregon in the winter:

Keep survival equipment in your car. Water and blankets at a minimum.

Stay the hell off of Forest Service roads. Most are marked (including this one) that they are not maintained for winter travel.

When you get stuck, start walking the way you came. Stay on the road. A human walks at three miles an hour. This guy was less than 10 hours from civilization if he had walked back down the road.

    We dallied under
    Vine maples and sapling alders
    Searched for lady slippers
    But instead
    Found blackberry riots and
    Desiccated branches

    An old skid road
    Brought ghost ferns and
    Hollows filled with
    Skunk cabbage
    While waves wrapped
    Intricate lacings of weeds
    'Round mule spinners

    His cyanotic eyes
    Were hard enough to make
    The sun turn tail and
    Tender enough to attract me
    To his world of illusion

Yeah, they said he left items behind so someone could possibly track him through the snow.

I've driven some of those roads. They are narrow, winding with steep drop-offs. And those are the paved roads. It would be easy to take a turn onto a Forest Service road in the snow and never realise you were off the main road.

Very tragic, but a reminder to never take nature for granted.

He walked 10 miles in a loop to end up a mile from his car then....

Yeah, apparently where he was found wasn't directly accessible from the location of the car. So though the two were a mile apart, he certainly traveled much further to get there..

I just hope he lived long enough to hear all the helicopters and have the peace of thinking his family had been rescued.

News reports here indicate they think he'd been dead since late on his first day out. Sweater, cotton jeans, and sneakers. Never really had a chance away from the car.

Fox News reported before I went to work last night the following: The car got stuck on a logging road that was supposed to be closed for the winter. Vandals had cut the lock and opened it. Even though it's not their fault, still sounds like a lawsuit awaiting the Forest Service. (I wonder if Oregon would allow for criminal charges involving involuntary manslaughter against the vandals, should they be caught).

They also reported that Kim was less than a mile from a fully stocked hunting lodge when he died. Bummer. Don't fuck with Mother Nature, she fucks back!

Well, the one road may have been opened...but they also chose not to heed the sign that warned the road they took can be impassable in winter.

They chose to "press on" in a storm, which was reckless.

I'm very sad for the family, but this is a constant theme. People assume that technology can keep them safe from harm. They are tools, but you have to have basic commen sense.

They also moved rocks out of the road to continue driving. Then they decided to take a gravel spur road when they couldn't make it up the paved road. It shouldn't take a gate to tell people that a road is impassable in a 2WD station wagon.

My own opinion is that is was really stupid in the first place to take small children on a trip like that. I won't take my little ones to the damn grocery store in a bad storm.
