    Be Careful Please

It's not in the news yet, but I imagine it will be tomorrow.

Tonight, just outside the town of aprox. 250 that I live in, a trucker was killed.

    How?

As unlikely as it may seem, a deer went through the window, killed the driver, and then ended up in the back of the cab.

Deer are dangerous on the roads, no doubt, but I would never have imagined one could leap high enough and hard enough to crash through a trucker's window.

If you live in a rural area...be careful.

Sad that the poor trucker was killed. On the flip side it's good that guy from other thread that has sex with dead deers did not come along the scene, that would have been very bad.

We had a turkey fly in an open cab window of a semi on the interstate one day.

Turkey ended up getting injured, and was floppin/flying all over the sleeper of the cab.

Ended up climbing in, and killing it with an asp.

Trucker got cut up, but was overall unharmed.

About 5 years ago, one of the deputies at the Sheriffs Department I was an explorer at hit a deer on the way to a call going about 100mph. Luckily, and by pure luck the deputy wasn't killed or even injured. I've seen pictures of the car, exterior and interior, and truly it was purely amazing he wasn't killed. The deer missed him by inches and literally went through the divider and what was left of it was shredded in the back seat. It was nasty, I guess they had to reupholster the entire car, as they were digging fur out from every cracks and cranny in that car for awhile. Crazy f'ing deer.

One of the things that "city folk" learn the hard way is that deer travel in groups. It's not the one that crosses in front of you that you have to worry about, its looking for her buddies that follow her!

I say "her" because this time of year, the bucks travel alone.

Yes, and quite rapidly when they think they can get lucky.

One of our guys was attacked by a large buck last night, broke the mirror off and gouged his fender. Put the mirror back on with duck tape.

What I read: Put the mirror on the buck with duck tape.

But now I have a very entertaining mental image of a buck with a rear view mirror.

This morning at 7:30 am, on my way to work, a doe crossed the county road in front of my vehicle. I slowed and thought...glad I saw her in time. Then I remembered AITG's comment. I KNOW that deer often travel together, but his post popped into my mind and I slowed again. Sure enough. There was a second one, and she came bounding out not more than a meter or two in front of my vehicle.

The local paper reported that a car hit the deer first, and it flew up and through the windshield of the semi. The car never stopped. Apparently, they didn't realize the semi wrecked.

Deer are dangerous on the roads, no doubt, but I would never have imagined one could leap high enough and hard enough to crash through a trucker's window.
I used to think the same thing, until my brother had a deer jump over his Toyota Tacoma. Its hoof left a drag mark along the top of his cab. Unbelievable.

A meter? Okay, Farva, why don't you go order a liter of cola?

A doberman cross breed I had when I was a kid jumped over the hood of a car and lived to tell of it. So did grandpa - and he made the most of that story for the last fifteen years of his life. Miss them both.

I know a trucker who will swear to moose horn scrapes on the top of his trailer. 13 and a half feet at least. No collision, scared animal jumping/sideswiped.

Deer as still the least of my worries. Sure, they can kill in an instant. Cows are much more of a hazard though. At least deer give you eyeshine.

So now thanks to the World Herald we know PhoenixRose lives in Odell. Roadtrip anyone? Authors can cook up some spicy stuff.
