(St. Matthews-AP) December 8, 2006 - A judge Friday afternoon sentenced to death the 23-year-old man who pleaded guilty last week to shooting an off-duty Orangeburg police officer two years ago.
Prosecutors successfully sought the death penalty against Mikal Deen Mahdi. They say Mahdi knew 56-year-old Orangeburg Public Safety Captain James Myers was a police officer when he shot him nine times and set his body on fire on Myers' Calhoun County farm in July 2004.
Mahdi's attorneys have said Mahdi couldn't have known Myers was a police officer.
They say he had a troubled childhood, with his mother leaving when he was young and his father ill-equipped to raise him and his older brother.
Circuit Judge Clifton Newman handed down the sentence at approximately 4:30pm Friday.
In his reasoning, the judge said that Mahdi cannot adapt to prison because he has repeatedly threatened law enforcement officers.
On Wednesday, the defense argued admitting responsibility should be enough to spare Mahdi's life.
But the judge said that the way in which Mahdi killed Jim Meyers did not warrant mercy.

Police officer or not, shooting a man 9 times, and then setting his body on fire, deserves the death penalty. It's all fun and games until they get caught, and are faced with a consequence. THEN, and only THEN, do they start feeling sorry for themselves, and start whining about a tough childhood. Then, and only then, do you hear, "Oh, I'm sorry."

Im surprised he even takes responsibilty. Most criminals, regarldless on the type of crime, think its the cops fault for being caught and arrested, ticketed etc. Its never their fault for committing the crime in the first place!!!!
