Officer Shot On West Side

CHICAGO -- A Chicago police officer was shot on the West Side in the Humboldt Park neighborhood Monday afternoon.
The officer suffered a gunshot wound in the arm and was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.
He was shot near Division Street and Artesian Avenue about 2:48 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.
Witnesses said the officer was responding to a fight between rival gang members.
Apparently, a group of young men gathered on the street and got into a confrontation. When the officer tried to intervene, he was shot in the arm. Witnesses told NBC5's Anna Davlantes that the officer was hit before he even got close to the men.
One witness said he saw the officer down in the middle of the street, struggling to get up.
Langford said the officer "seems to be doing well" at the hospital.
Davlantes said it was not clear whether anyone aimed at the officer purposefully, or if he was shot as part of the ongoing fight. Many witnesses appeared to flee the scene when news crews arrived, Davlantes reported.
Residents who stayed to speak with NBC5 said they frequently hear gunshots in the neighborhood, and they believe there is a gang problem in the area.
Police News Affairs could not immediately comment on the shooting, according to News Affairs Sgt. Eugene Mullins.
It is not clear whether anyone is in custody.
