Governor Suspends All Florida Executions

OCALA, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush suspended all executions in Florida after a medical examiner said Friday that officials botched the insertion of the needles during the execution of a convicted killer earlier this week.

The execution of a convicted killer took 34 minutes -- more than twice as long as normal.

Angel Nieves Diaz, 55, was put to death Wednesday for murdering of the manager of a Miami topless bar during a holdup in 1979. The condemned man not only took 34 minutes to die, but also needed a rare second dose of the lethal chemicals.

Dr. William Hamilton, who performed the autopsy, said the needles pierced Diaz's veins and then went into soft tissue in his arms. The lethal chemicals are supposed to go directly into the veins.

Hamilton refused to say whether he thought Diaz died a painful death.

"I am going to defer answers about pain and suffering until the autopsy is complete," he said.

He said the results were preliminary and toxicology tests and other tests may take several weeks.

Florida's move comes the same day that a federal judge who imposed a moratorium on executions in California on Friday declared the state's method of lethal injection unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel ruled in San Jose that California's "implementation of lethal injection is broken." But, he said, "it can be fixed."

California has been under a capital-punishment moratorium since February. That's when the execution of a murderer was called off, amid fears the inmate might suffer an excruciating death.

The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld executions -- by hanging, firing squad, electric chair and gas chamber -- despite any pain they might cause. But the high court has left unsettled the issue of whether the pain is unconstitutionally excessive.

Lethal injection is the preferred execution method in 37 states.

It really pisses me off that all these liberal panty waists are so damn concerned with the pain and suffering of these pieces of shits. What about the pain and suffering of their victims? The victims families? The communities where these victims lived?? What about their pain, their suffering???

Fuck them, I say bring back hanging in the town square at noon. Might deter some of the crime, if not who cares. Or better yet kill them the same way they killed their victim.

My idea is dress all the death row inmates in special military uniforms and give them ranks of colonels...Drop them off in Iraq in the bad parts of town. once they are caught the terrorists will have their way with them and we can look at it like we are saving americans lives, terrorists get what they want and we are saving a servicemans life. Or use them as "guards" around are people over there. Operation Human Shield (stole that from SP)

I also like the idea of giving them that 'moment of clarity' as they finally fully realize the seriousness of what they have done, while they suffer the same fate their victims had.

I wonder how many of them would say "...damn, I do deserve to be here..."
