Prosecutor: NYPD Officer Begged For Mercy Before Being Killed

NEW YORK -- An undercover detective, after seeing his partner executed, begged for mercy before being killed himself in a weapons-buying sting gone awry, a prosecutor said Monday in closing arguments at the alleged gunman's death penalty trial.

"Pleading for his life, begging to live, knowing he would never see his family again, knowing that this was the end -- that, ladies and gentlemen, is how James Nemorin spent his last moments on this earth," prosecutor Morris Fodeman told jurors in federal court in Brooklyn.

Ronell Wilson, 24, is charged with killing Nemorin, 36, and Rodney Andrews, 34, during an attempted robbery in March 2003 on Staten Island. They were shot in the back of the head inside their unmarked car and dumped on a street by a "ruthless murderer," Fodeman said.


"Why would he execute two men in cold blood?" he said. "Because he could. ... Because he wanted to impress his criminal friends."

Fodeman held up photos of the two officers and the murder weapon to emphasize his points. The defendant, wearing a tie and an argyle sweater, occasionally put his head down and rubbed his eyes as he listened, but showed no emotion.

The defense was to give its closing arguments later Monday.

Wilson was one of seven suspects arrested in the case. The other six -- including a man prosecutors say was with Wilson at the time of the shooting -- have pleaded guilty to various charges.

The witness, an admitted drug dealer named Jessie Jacobus, testified that Wilson was the mastermind of a scheme to rob the officers, believing they were illegal gun buyers carrying $1,200.

Jacobus, 20, "personally witnessed the defendant execute two people before his very eyes," the prosecutor said. "This wasn't something he just made up. He was there."

Wilson's lawyers sought to implicate Jacobus using testimony from a New York Police Department footprint analyst. The witness testified that a bloody toe print matching Jacobus' boot was found in the spot where prosecutors say the gunman fired -- the back seat of a car, on the driver's side.

Prosecutors have cited fibers, bullets and other pieces of forensic evidence that they say point to Wilson. They also have spotlighted rap lyrics found in his pants pocket, saying he wrote them to brag about the shootings.

"Leave a 45 slugs in da back of ya head. Cause I'm gettin dat bread, ain't goin stop to I'm dead," wrote Wilson, who went by the street name Rated R.

His lawyers have said the lyrics were only boastful fantasies.

If Wilson is convicted, the same jury will determine if he should be executed or sentenced to life in prison without parole.

I still cringe when I think of the guy that was killed that way. Great way to learn that you DON'T clear a jam by sticking your foot in to dislodge the stuck piece.

I wouldn't make it that easy on him.

Maybe pull him up two or three times...let him almost die....then think he's getting another chance. Let him beg a little more...remind him of the men he killed...the fathers and husbands...how they begged for mercy. I'd taunt and tease and give him hope....then snatch it away. I'd sing his song to him...only change the words a little.
