More proof that NBA players are just thugs

DENVER - Nuggets head coach George Karl had harsh words for Isiah Thomas after the NBA handed down the suspensions following Saturday evening's basketball brawl.

Watch the entire press conference with Nuggets head coach George Karl about the suspensions of his players by the NBA. December 18, 2006.
Listen to the entire conference call with NBA Commissioner David Stern. December 18, 2006.

On Monday, NBA League Commissioner David Stern suspended seven players, including Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets' star forward and the leading scorer in the NBA.

Anthony will be suspended for 15 games. New York Knicks player Nate Robinson and Nuggets' J.R. Smith each received ten-game suspensions and four other players were also suspended.

Stern also fined each organization $500,000 saying the fines are meant to show he is serious about cleaning up the game.

There was no separate penalty for Knicks coach Isiah Thomas, who had reportedly warned Anthony not to go into the lane before the mayhem started Saturday night.

The altercation began when Knicks player Mardy Collins made a flagrant foul on Nuggets player J.R. Smith.

Shortly before the foul, Thomas was taped by a television broadcast talking to a Nuggets player. Several news agencies have reported he was telling Anthony not to go near the basket.

After the game, Thomas told reporters he said that Anthony and Camby should not have been in the game because the Nuggets were up by 19 points.

Stern acknowledged hearing about the comment, but said he relied only on "definitive information" when handing out punishments.

Collins has been suspended for six games. Teammate Jared Jeffries will miss four.

Denver's Nene and the Knicks' Jerome James were both penalized one game for leaving the bench area during the chaos.

Karl talked to reporters on Monday and when he was told it did not appear Thomas got a separate penalty he said, "If that's the truth then there's no question it's wrong."

"There is no question in my mind that it was premeditated. It was directed by Isiah. I think his actions after the game were despicable and he made a bad situation worse. I'll swear on my children's lives that I never thought about running up the score," said Karl.

"I think he's a jackass," Karl said about Thomas.

Karl later broke into swearing about the situation before ending the press conference.

Following the brawl, Anthony and the other nine players on the court at the time were ejected for fighting.

In an apology issued Sunday, Anthony said, "Last night's altercation with the Knicks escalated further than it should have. I take full responsibility for my actions in the matter. In the heat of the moment I let my emotions get the best of me. I apologize to the fans, the Denver Nuggets, the NBA, my mother, and my family for the embarrassment I have caused them. I ask you all for your forgiveness."

Anthony added, "I also want to make a personal apology to Mardy Collins and his family," Anthony said in his statement. "My actions were inexcusable, and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation. It's my hope that we work to move forward from this event, and never let something like this happen again."

Marcus Camby, Andre Miller, Eduardo Najera, Smith and Anthony were the Nuggets who were ejected; Channing Frye, David Lee, Collins, Robinson and Jeffries were the Knicks who were kicked out.

    Denver won 123-100.

Karl said he was going to wait to talk to Anthony and Smith at length until the "pain" of the situation had died down.

"There's nothing to justify what 'Melo did and there's nothing to justify our actions. We were wrong. We know the rules. We should have handled it better and now we're going to live with the punishment that has been given," said Karl.

However, Karl did say he thought the penalties against Anthony and Smith were unfair.

"I think any coach in this situation is going to say it's definitely not fair. The league has its way of dealing with it. I'm sure they have their reasons," said Karl. "When you're threatened and then the guy does it, I think there's a human reaction that has to be understood."

Karl says he's confident his team can still win without Anthony.

"I think it's better for me just to coach the team and try to figure out how to surprise the world by winning a lot of games," he said. "I'm very confident that somewhere along the way this is going to turn into a positive and it's my job to make it a positive."

This was a ridiculous brawl on TV. SHITTY SHITTY SHITTY fucking thing to show the kids that are fans. Then to top it all off it turns out it was PREMEDITATED ASSAULT, simply because the losing team was being humiliated on the scoreboard. I can understand not intentionally running up the score in youth sports. But for the fucking gazillions of dollars these guys make? Fucking deal with it. Instead they clear the benches and brawl? Please.

Sorry to anyone out there who likes the NBA, but I've had too many sour experiences with their players that I can't stand hearing about them anymore. Closing down whole sections of a waterpark so an NBA player doesn't have to wait in lines, pissing off the rest of the families that paid their money too. Watching them snuff white kids in malls, but they're all to happy to sign "baby brothah's" ball. Putting on full riot gear in preparation for gang-related melees when Snoop Dogg comes to town, and he and Melo rent out entire groups of bars and strip clubs. Please. It just sickens me.

Saw the video on FoxNews. These overpaid jackasses need a lesson in reality. I would love to see how long their pampered asses would last on a Saturday night in gangland on Federal Blvd or East Colfax in Denver instead of their high-dollar mansions with their bodyguards. Then we'd see who the true thugs are. "Snake 187" from the MS-13's would make these d-bags his BEEEAAACH!!!!

Only problem with that is they have fans even there. Someone would look up to them enough to keep from killing them.

Agreed. Why? Becaus inmates know there are consequences. What is the consequence for these guys? Missing some games? Please! how about some disorderly conduct?? Assault?! They fined a multi-multi-million team $500k? HA!

Amen on hockey. I miss the old NHL though. I don't mind a good old fashioned square off, as long as it's clean and regulated. Since the strike, the league is very public about looking for more "finessed" players, as opposed to the brutes of yore. Here in Colorado, we lost guys like Drury and Foote. Those guys were brutes, but they were brutes that put the puck in the net. Sure, they had aggression, but it was AWESOME SPORTSMAN aggression...the will to win. That fighting left the league with all that aggression. Not saying I don't still love hockey, but it ain't the same. Avs games used to sell out. I was at the Oilers game the other night...my first one since the strike. I was less than impressed with the attendance.

Actually, and I know I am in the minority here, but I disagree. Not saying I don't think that we and teachers should be MUCH better compensated, but I would disagree with paying me out of the pockets of pro sports teams. Like it or not, they are a business, and they are good at what they do, which is draw crowds. Teams create jobs, pride in a city, etc, etc. They pay their players a lot BECAUSE they are good at what they do...which is play at a level that tens of thousands want to watch. You start paying players less (salary caps, etc), and you see diminished quality of sport. Look at the NHL right now. You don't have the rivalries you once did (i.e. Colorado and the Detroit Red Wings). Why? Because teams can't stock the heavy hitting powerhouses they once did. They can't due to salary constraints. What is the effect of this socializing of the league? Less drive, less heart, less skill...less people in attendance. It is currently killing hockey. Remember the XFL? Where players were paid NOT according to skill but rather what position they played?

I disagree with any element of socialism creeping into private business or any other element of free enterprise.
