Deputy Comes Through For Cancer Patient
On 12/22/06 around 0900 hours, Ramona Deputy Jess Allensworth investigated a report of the theft of a bed frame from a residence located in the 700 block of 9th Street in Ramona. At time of theft, the frame was sitting in the victim's driveway with a "for sale sign" attached to it. A male suspect was seen driving up to the residence in a red Toyota pickup and
stealing the frame. The value of the bed frame was approximately $60 and it belonged to a 17-year old male who lived at the residence.
The story behind the theft is that the 17-year old was selling his own bed frame, in an attempt to raise money with his other siblings. They had hoped to collect enough in order to buy a Sony PSP Playstation Christmas present for their 13- year old brother, “Chase.” Chase is terminally ill and has long been fighting with a rare cancerous form of mastocytosis.
The family is financially strapped with mounting medical bills and was unable to afford the gift. The family was deeply saddened that a thief could ruin what was nothing short of a noble act by Chase's siblings.
Without prompting, a voluntary collection effort began, spearheaded by Deputy Allensworth and Corporal Brewer. A collection was taken up between Ramona Deputies, the California Highway Patrol Resident Officers, and members of the local community who learned of the victim's plight. The effort accumulated over $420 in donations within a few short
Family members of Deputy Allensworth and Corporal Brewer then got into the act. While the deputies worked their shifts, the family members spread the word through the local community and also went shopping. With proceeds from the collection, they purchased a new PSP Playstation with additional games and a carrying case, to allow Chase to take it with him to and from the hospital.
Although a suspect has not been identified or the stolen property recovered, Deputy Allensworth delivered the new PSP Playstation, accessories and the remaining proceeds to Chase and his family. Additionally, a few leads from concerned community members into replacing the stolen bunk-bed frame are also presently being explored.Molly Weasley makes Chuck Norris eat his vegetables.
