AUSTIN, Texas -- A 12-year-old Austin-area boy has died after he was shot in the eye with an air rifle.

Travis County sheriff's investigators said they're investigating the boy's death as an accident. They said he and a 13-year-old friend were playing with their air rifles in a pasture Thursday when the incident happened.

Detectives said the pellet lodged in the boy's brain, and he died two hours later at Austin's Brackenridge Hospital. They're not yet sure whether the fatal shot came from the boy's gun or his friend's.

No identities have been released and officials said no charges are expected to be filed.
