Mansfield Bobby Is 'top Of The Cops'
Supercop Diederik Coetzee nabbed 404 crooks in 2006 - equal to 1.1 arrests a day.
The Mansfield bobby, nicknamed 'Robocop', beat his personal best of 366 in 2005.
PC Coetzee, 50, beat officer for the Ladybrook estate, set himself a personal target of 400 arrests for 2006.
It surpasses the mark of Carlisle community PC Gerard 'Mac' Maguire, who held the national record of 369 arrests in 2005, beating PC Coetzee by three.
"I did really well," said PC Coetzee. "But I am not chasing numbers, I am just doing my bit.
"I am in a lucky position where I can get these arrests. I have got a nice beat area, but my colleagues work harder than I do.
"Everybody does something different. I want to get better and better. It is a personal thing.
"I just want to go out there to make a difference."
PC Coetzee earned his nickname in Mansfield because of his high arrest rate.
The former dog handler from South Africa is also called 'Mountain Bike Morris' as he cycles around the estate.
During his four years in Mansfield he has worn out four bikes and was given one by the Ladybrook Neighbourhood Management Team as a replacement.
He was controversially told to curb arrests outside Sherwood Street Day Centre because his presence was deterring people who had skipped court from attending the centre. But police later said he was free to make arrests wherever he wanted.
Coun Andre Camilleri, portfolio holder for public protection at Mansfield District Council, said: "All credit to him. We are lucky to have him.
"He really has helped us bring crime down.
"He really works hard, as do all the officers, and is very committed.
"His beat gives him opportunity to arrest a lot of people.
"The criminals know that if PC Coetzee is around he will arrest them."
Maria Gibson, 41, from Newgate Lane, Mansfield, said: "He is just fantastic and gets the results.
"He doesn't mess about. He is exemplary. There should be more like him nationally.
"I think it comes from his South African roots." chris.birkle@nottinghamevening post.co.uk

Sod that! Think of all the paperwork and the court cases. His overtime will bankrupt the force!
