New Orleans Eyes Curfew After 8 Slayings

NEW ORLEANS - With at least eight slayings in the city in the first week of the new year, officials are considering a curfew to help stem the violence, the police superintendent said Saturday.
"It's something we're just sort of talking about, to see if that will make a difference," police Superintendent Warren Riley said.
Mayor Ray Nagin, meanwhile, urged residents not to leave the city, still rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina, because of the recent killings. He said the slayings could be a tipping point that "galvanizes our community" to find solutions.
Some residents have called for a march on City Hall on Thursday to demand action to curb the violence.
Nagin and Riley both tried to reassure residents that they were doing all they can to make the city safer. Riley said some covert operations were under way and Nagin said he hoped to have details sometime next week on a "more creative, aggressive" plan developed in talks he has had with local ministers.
Riley said the slayings are a part of a chronic problem that goes back to the city's school system and what he sees as the city's failure, over many years, to adequately educate and provide job opportunities for residents.
He said he's also concerned about making sure "hard-core criminals" are prosecuted and kept in jail.
Problems will continue until there are improvements in the criminal justice system, which has struggled to get court cases moving again since Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, Riley said.
Now that’s a novel idea if I’ve ever heard one.

And no you can't have any.

They don't seem to have any problem prosecuting police officers.

No, stopping all crime will galvanize the community, you focking idiot. Slayings just make people leave, not find solutions.
If the curfew includes "shoot on sight" for looters, muggers, robbers and vandals, he may have something there - I'd vote for him if he did that - And it were Texas, he wouldn't even have to amend the Deadly Force laws at night

As far as prosecuting criminals goes, imagine every piece of criminal evidence destroyed, imagine every legal document gone, imagine a legality called "swift and fair trial". NOPD and the city have lots of issues. And not all of us asked for or got handouts!

A lot of them went to cities like Houston, and are now creating new records over there... So Houston is now doing some hurricane clean-up on their own, Texas style

Yea, sometimes it DOES smell like urine....When we have a lot (not all ..I dont stereotype ) of tourists visiting at Mardi Gras that cant hold their liquior, rude tongues, and arent yet potty trained
. They urinate mostly on Bourbon Street. For them that is the ONLY place in NO.
FYI there is a lot more to New Orleans than all the negatives displayed by the media. Heck, you LEOS should know from personal experience about bad images and the media.

Fuck nagin and his ideas. The dumb bastards that voted him into office need to be drug into the street and castrated and neutered so that the stupidity doesn't have spread.
He's a sorry piece of shit that couldn't handle a wet dream let alone a crime problem. Maybe if more time was spent prosecuting the assholes on the street instead of prosecuting the police for defending themselves and others in a mother fucking warzone, they wouldn't have a fucking problem.
End rant.
