U.S launches airstrikes in Somalia
'Bout damn time.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070109/...af/somalia_270"Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you.
He is training with minimum food or water, in austere conditions, day and night.
The only thing clean on him is his weapon.
He doesn't worry about what workout to do---his rucksack weighs what it weighs, and he runs until the enemy stops chasing him.
The True Believer doesn't care "how hard it is"; he knows he either wins or he dies.
He doesn't go home at 1700; he is home.
He knows only the Cause.
Now, who wants to quit?"

Let's hope it doesn't result in another Black Hawk Down film, though. One was bad enough.

As long as we don't spread ourselves to thin. We don't need to be fighting wars on 2 fronts.

The crazy thing is, these Iraq and Afghanistan wars should not have put such a strain on our military like it has - I think it shows that our military is not capable of fighting a truly major regional conflict (like a war with North Korea and/or China, which could start at any time).
When they start drawing on National Guard and Reserve resources like they have, in both manpower and equipment, red flags go up in my mind.Last edited by TXCharlie; 01-09-07 at 12:13 PM.

I think it's less that we don't have the ability to fight a major war, and more that we haven't trained for the type of conflict we're experiencing. We could "win" in Iraq, but it would mean serious civilian casualties due to the type of weaponry and tactics we're used to. When we have to be stationed on every street corner to patrol like police officers, we've gotten ourselves in a bad spot.

Your points were good too, Charlie - these conflicts shouldn't have put such a strain on our military. I guess it just takes a long time for such a monstrous organization to adapt entirely. The smaller, special units are flexible and decently funded, but the military as a whole has a tough time.

I think the problem is that we don't fight "wars" anymore, we fight battles. If we fought a "war" Fallujah would have been leveled much the same as Dresden in WWII, and we'd be less concerned over "winning hearts and minds" than we would with achieving victory. Until we take the gloves off, the fight will cointinue. Do you think Etiopia was concerned about the rest of the world's perception when they kicked the Islamic zealots out of power in Somolia? Maybe we should learn a lesson from them.
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

Our problem, as far as not winning a clear victory, is that we are humane. We err on the side of caution, by usually giving people the benefit of the doubt as far as their involvement in the insurgency. The problem with fighting terrorists is that they can be anyone. Their uniform is usually just a torn T-shirt they wrap around their head to hide their identity. Two seconds later... they're back as average Muhammed the Iraqi baker. We can't win this without the help of the Iraqis who know the identities of those involved. If they don't care to take part in cleaning up their country, I'd rather we just hand it back to them in shambles.

Victory
Can't agree more. When the Military send the JAG officers packing, change the rules of engagement so that when they (the soldier) feels his being threatened, he can take action; not waiting until they shoot first. Hell, we Police have less stregent rules in the use of deadly force. If they are fired on from a Mosque, it becomes a parking lot. If the car doesn't stop at a check point, the car is stopped, period. Let Allah figure out who was in it. We must fight to win. As it is now, we are fighting to lose.
