Car transporter thief on rampage
The driver of a stolen car transporter went on the rampage during a 40-mile police chase through two counties.
The Iveco lorry smashed through the barriers of a bridge and a factory gate during Wednesday's chase from Swaffham in Norfolk to Spalding in Lincolnshire.
A 20-year-old man from Pontefract, West Yorkshire, was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft and traffic offences.
The lorry, stolen in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was stopped when the tyres were punctured with a stinger.
A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said the chase started on the A47 in Swaffham and carried on the A17 through Kings Lynn, Sutton Bridge and Holbeach before heading towards Spalding and ending in nearby Weston Hills.
'Extensive damage'
He said: "When the vehicle reached Sutton Bridge the barriers were down, but the vehicle did not stop and went straight through the barriers, causing extensive damage and narrowly missing another heavy goods vehicle."
Tony Robinson, bridge keeper at Sutton Bridge, told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "Police asked me to drop the barrier - I saw the blue lights coming and a vehicle on the wrong side of the road coming straight for the barrier.
"He smashed into one barrier and then hit another one," he said.
He said the transporter narrowly missed a parked lorry and extensively damaged the barriers on the bridge.
The stinger device was set up and eventually caused the lorry to slow, but not before it crashed through the factory gates at Lincolnshire Field Products in Weston Hills.
"The driver of the vehicle got out and ran off but a short time later was pursued on foot by officers and a male was arrested," the force spokesman added.
He said the chase, that ended at about 1810 GMT, involved Lincolnshire and Norfolk Police cars and the Norfolk police helicopter.

Chased a lost or stolen Double Decker Bus once. Not for long though, it didn't fit under a bridge. One arrest.

Garbage truck driven by a disgruntled (and terminated) employee.
Wasn't hard to chase... we just followed the smell.
Funny part was the cleanup after he TC'ed.

Man charged after lorry pursuit
Police have charged a man with the theft of a car transporter after a 40 -mile (64km) chase across two counties.
Police followed the lorry from Swaffham, Norfolk, to Spalding, Lincolnshire before using a stinger device to deflate its tyres.
A 20-year-old man from Upton, West Yorkshire, has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking and assaulting a police officer.
The vehicle stopped after crashing through factory gates in Weston Hills.
During the pursuit the Iveco lorry also smashed through the barriers of a bridge.
The low-loader had been reported stolen from Barnsley, South Yorkshire overnight on 17-18 January.

Charge of aggrivated vehicle taking is probably because he caused damage and drove dangerously while in someone elses truck.
Assault police could be when he tried to run away and was arrested.
I would assume that failing to stop for the police and driving with no insurance would be on the file as well but they could have been dropped in favour of the more serious offences.

"A land train, heavy plant or military armoured vehicle"
Well, I used to command a tank or two or five.
That was fun on the roads in Germany.

for Dave's poll...
... and I'm curious. What's the biggest vehicle you've driven?
18 wheeler here - got the truck loaded, driver fell sick, had to be moved. Never obeyed traffic regulations so much as those 10 miles without a CDL.
Funny, as I used to drive a single axle semi around all the time when I was 14 and didn't give it a second thought. Aw, the way youth veils well intentioned legal trespasses. I do miss that.

I've driven an M1A1 tank. And today I was driving a truck with doubles around the yard (haven't gotten to drive it with both trailers on the road yet).
And speaking of tanks, Kelly, since when is a tank platoon five tanks?"I'm not a coward,
I've just never been tested
I'd like to think that if I was,
I would pass"
