MAN ARRESTED AFTER DROPPING HEROIN BAGS ON FLOOR

A 42-year-old Wilmington man, who appeared to be intoxicated, was arrested Thursday morning after he allegedly dropped a bag of drugs on the floor of a Greenville store.

State police charged Stephen F. Berl with possession of heroin, felony possession with intent to deliver heroin, and felony delivery of heroin, following his arrest in the Joseph A. Banks clothing store on Kennett Pike.

Berl was committed to Young Correctional Institute after failing to post $11, 500 cash bail.

State police spokesman Sgt. Joshua Bushweller said about 10:23 a.m. troopers were called to the Country Curtain store at 4001 Kennett Pike to investigate a report of an intoxicated person.

Troopers learned that the man had dropped a bag on the display floor in the store containing what appeared to be drugs.

The man left the store without the bag prior to troopers’ arrival, Bushweller said.

Troopers canvassing the area found Berl in the adjacent Joseph A. Bank clothing store and found him in possession of 11 bags of a powdery substance that tested positive for heroin.

Bushweller said 13 additional bags of heroin were found in the bag recovered in the Country Curtain store.

Witnesses in the store were able to identify Berl as the man who dropped the bag in the store.
