Kid Breaks Into The Wrong House
Off-Duty Officer Kills Alleged Teen Intruder
Police To Hold Roundtable Discussion
POSTED: 1:51 pm CST January 30, 2007
UPDATED: 4:18 pm CST January 30, 2007
CHICAGO -- A teenager allegedly broke into an off-duty officer’s home Tuesday afternoon in the Gresham neighborhood and was fatally shot when the officer confronts him.
Now, a Chicago police roundtable discussion is under way.
The shooting occurred at 123 Nunyabidness Street, according to Fire Media Affairs Assistant Director Eve Rodriguez.
At about 8:30 a.m., an off-duty Gresham District officer, still in uniform, was returning home from work when he found his back door ajar and his home burglarized, said police News Affairs Director Monique Bond. The officer, an 11-year veteran , entered his home and heard voices. The officer announced himself as an officer before he used his service weapon to shoot the man , who was believed to be armed and reaching into his pocket , Bond said.
"The officer was in fear of his life," she said.
Police believe there may have been a second person in the home who fled when he heard the officer entering, Bond said. Police recovered a knife from the scene.
The injured male suspect was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Rodriguez said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said a 15-year-old, whose name was not released, died of gunshot wounds at Christ Medical Center at 9:55 a.m.
"We are not releasing the age or identity of the suspected intruder pending notification of a legal guardian," Bond said.
No one else was at home at the time of the shooting and no one else was injured, Bond said.
A roundtable discussion was being conducted Tuesday afternoon to determine if the off-duty officer followed state and departmental guidelines in his use of force, she said.

Sounds like a good shoot from the story. But Im sure someone will bring the age of the dirtbag, and chastise the officer for it.

Love those Round Tables. What is the common consesus on how to deal with this? What are the political reprecussions, not that the officer did right. Lets hope the Officer is cleared. Sounds good to me.

Yep. Sounds like a proper response to me.

they go to the juvenile center, get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, watch tv and go home....
really frustrating.http://www.allpoetry.com/Grunts%20Girl
We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

I love how they kept saying 'teen' instead of 'burglar' or 'armed thief' - 15 year old boys are often adult sized and have no control, and don't feel they need it. Worst they'd get is a slap on the wrist.
I hope the officer gets cleared and doesn't let it bother him.\\` ` ` ` < ` )___/\

I can't believe they published his address. I'd be pissed.
As for the shooting: from the info I read, it sounds like a justified shoot.

I remember being in Kosovo and Bosnia looking at the 8 and 9 year old boys as they played with sticks acting like they were shooting each other. As soon as they put those sticks down and picked up a weapon, they were combatants..age didnt matter anymore.
Just because a person is only a teen doesnt change the matter. They would more likely try to do something rash as opposed to an adult due to the fact that they can possibly get away with it."Sometimes people need a little help. Sometimes people need to be forgiven. And sometimes they need to go to jail."

Good one by the Poleeces. Here is the deal with the round table we have to go to them no matter what when it involves a shooting. it is made up of a board of police and civilians you and your attorney.

This is Chicago you're talking about, they're not normal. I'll bet the officer goes through hell.

Two things:
1. Why don’t they have a round table for the perp pos?
2. Time for the Castle Doctrine to come up from Florida.
We are the thin blue line
between you
and all the money in the world.
And no you can't have any.

Actually been to one they arent bad at all. They look at the reports, they ask your side of the story and thats it. One of the guys on my team was in a shooting I handled the paper and so on, so when he went in I sat at the door and listened, very painless.

we have something similar to the "castle doctrine" here... We call it (not officially) the "Make My Day" law

Without looking it up again for the exact verbage, it basically states that a homeowner can use deadly force against an intruder whenever someone breaks in with the intent to commit a crime, and the homeowner reasonably believes that the shithead may use any force (no matter how slight) agains any occupant.
I doubt it is very hard to justify the "reasonable belief" that the badguy might use any force
