Booze Bracelet' Monitors DUI Defendants, Convicts
(CBS) SEATTLE Your sweat says a lot about you and now it's being used to monitor defendants who are charged or convicted of DUI’s, using "booze bracelets."
The SCRAM -- which stands for Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor -- ankle bracelet keeps in contact with the skin. If a person being monitored drinks alcohol, his or her sweat will give it away.
The bracelet tests for alcohol every hour, 24 hours a day. The information is downloaded to a modem. If the defendant has been drinking, a judge gets an e-mail and can issue an arrest warrant.
A judge in Seattle uses the bracelet to monitor defendants who are charged with alcohol-related offenses such as DUI’s or domestic violence cases.
