12 pit bulls seized in raids put to death
Officials say animals posed risk to employees at animal shelter

DAYTON, Ohio - A dozen pit bull terriers seized in police raids have been put to death because of fears the dogs would attack employees caring for them at an animal shelter.
The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center had been holding 72 animals seized by Dayton police during raids between July and October. The dogs were to be used as evidence against five men facing felony dogfighting charges.
The county ordered the 12 pit bulls killed on the advice of Mark Kumpf, the director of the animal shelter. Kumpf said some of the dogs had attacked employees, and all of them were extremely aggressive toward other animals and the staff.
Attorney John Rion, who represents two of the defendants in the dogfighting cases, said the owners could file a civil lawsuit over the decision to euthanize the animals by alleging unauthorized taking of property. Rion did not say whether his clients intended to do so.
The county estimates that it spent $60,000 to care for the 12 pit bulls that were euthanized. Euthanizing the dogs costs about $5 per dog, said Amy Wiedeman, county director of administrative services.
They should have put the owners down also.

Put down Pitt bulls and their owners? I agree and I'll take a ringside seat. I've seen Pitts do what they're bred to do. Nothing but ugly.

Interesting how during WWI the pitbull was used as a symbol, and a working dog it seems, for the military. Later people became familiar with the breed from the one on "Our Gang" (Little Rascals to others)
What an image change this breed has undergone.

I get your point I know the history. I don't like the breed. I have a Doberman Pinscher. I know that history too. I also know quite a few people that don't care for that breed because they view it dangerous. And you know what? Thats ok with me.
There is a lot to say about this subject. Right or wrong I see it this way. A firearm is made (bred, whatever) for a reason, however a properly handled firearm won't hurt anyone. In the hands of the wrong person or handled irresponsibly it can be deadly.
I don't care for Fords either but I have to drive one. Sorry if I offended you. I'm sure if you have a Pit it is a great dog under your care. Again no offense intended.

I too have a Doberman Pinscher and a Shar-Pei; both are great dogs.
It's just the old saying "the more I know people, the more I like dogs"; and the more I hate the assholes that abuse dogs.
I am glad I'm not a street cop, I'd get in so much trouble; but if I was an animal cop I'd be in jail.

Hey brother, it would take more than that to offend me. I was only challenging your statement because this is something that I feel very strongly about (and I like a good debate every now and then). There are no hard feelings here, just a difference in opinion.
My dogs have always been more loyal to me than most humans ever have, so I owe it to them to stick up for them when people start casting undue guilt on a breed that most people know so little about.

I want a weiner dog. My wife doesn't like them, though.

Here's my dobe. She's 5. Her ears won't stand due to a genetic defect. Spoiled rotten and thinks she one of the kids.

Doberman's ears won't stand up on their own, they have to be cropped. Naturally they have both floppy ears and long tails. So don't worry, your pup's not defective, someone just didn't have the heart to mutilate her adorable ears
