New Method of teaching about STD's

Ummmm WTF??? Sorry if repost, I was taking re-cert class today and this came up and I could not believe it...

School Lesson Has Students Chew Same Piece Of Gum

(KUTV) ROCKVILLE, Md. - Counseling officials in Maryland are being heavily criticized for introducing a lesson to four different schools Ė in which students were supposed to chew and pass around the same piece of gum.

The lesson was created by the Rockville (Md.) pregnancy counseling center in order to show students how easily sexually transmitted diseases are spread from person to person.

A speaker from the counseling center asked students to chew the same piece of gum to see how many would be willing to do it. School officials say at least 100 students participated in the exercise, but not all of them chewed the gum.

The countyís director of school health services called the lesson unsanitary and unacceptable. Many parents were also angered by the issue.

School officials say employees from the counseling center will not be asked to speak to their students again in the future.

WTF indeed, THAT is disgusting. I cannot believe that anyone would find that to be an acceptable method of teaching.

If the students would be a little smarter in their life decisions, they would have said no to the a.b.c. gum. Just like they probably won't say no to unprotected sex.
Good lesson. They should make smarter choices.

The thing is, they are purporting on showing how sexually transmitted diseases are spread. Last time I checked, (maybe I am old school) but that was done through sexual acts..??

This has nothing to do with choice, teachers are trusted and should be trusted by students to guide, not be blindsided by some stupid experiment created by some clueless dipshit.

Exactly. And Gatekeeper does make a good point. I wonder what grade the students are in.

My comment was based on the idea that these were at least high school students or higher. "The lesson was created by the Rockville (Md.) pregnancy counseling center ." And I understand that they could choose not to participate.
"School officials say at least 100 students participated in the exercise, but not all of them chewed the gum."
It is not much different than someone inviting you to jump off a bridge. They need to learn to take responsibility for their actions/choices. America seems to be forgetting this very simple yet important concept.

That's why I was wondering about the age of the students. While I vehemently disagree with the method used and would continue to disagree regardless of the students' ages, there's a difference in decision making abilities if the students were high school age or if they were younger.

Well, I'll buck the trend...seems like a very effective way to demonstrate how one person's sexual history impacts others.

And the gum's only been in their mouths.

If that was my kid I'd chew some ass, then invite the school superintendent to chew the same ass and see if he accepted or declined.

As a demonstration I should hope it would drive the point home, but I should also hope that they wouldn't actually allow those numbnuts who DID go for the gum to actually get it.

And send a note home with the idiots who decided to chew it anyhow

That, Gatekeeper, would entail the parents raising their kids properly before they got to High School. But the parents are outraged that the public schools didn't teach their kids better morals before that.

Don't you know anything? The parents don't have to raise the kids anymore- they want the school to do it all.

Ya know, Iam up in the air 'bout this lesson. On the one hand it DOES make a STRONG point and that is whats needed these days, and lets face it. HOW many of these kids swap spit on a regular basis anyways and on a lesser level, share food or gum?
ANd yes its about STDs and from what I remember its from sexual contact BUT doesnt ALL sexual contact even those messy scary first times begin with KISSING and that is done with the MOUTH???

Good argument but in the end it might be a bad plan...

Maybe the counselors were out of line in actually letting the idiots chew the gum. But the students who actually chose to participate are a hell of a lot stupider than the counselors were misguided.

Instead of focusing on the likely poor judgment of the counselors, I think the parents should focus a little more closely on why their kids would voluntarily do something so stupid in the first place.

There are a lot of days I feel exactly the same way. I've had a lot of discussion with parents that can't or haven't managed their kids well, and they're looking for someone to make it all better, without them having to be too terribly involved in that 'fix it' process.

As to this lesson...it was devised by a pregnancy counseling center? They hire teachers now to do their lesson planning? I only teach 6th grade general science, but I know that a primary concern with every lesson/lab, is student safety. You try to control the variables as much as possible to ensure that. The concept is sound...kids learn best through examples like this...I do however, question the method. That's a can of worms I'd never choose to open.
