    Hostage situation in Chicago Ends

    Teenager releases hostages without incident

February 25, 2007 (CHICAGO) - Chicago police say they've resolved a hostage situation on the city's South Side without incident.

Spokeswoman Monique Bond says an armed 19-year-old man took four people hostage in an apartment on the 8400 block of South Bennett around one a-m today.

Bond says the hostages included a 12-year-old girl, a five-year-old girl, a five-year-old boy and an adult woman.

Police believe the children were the man's siblings and the female was a babysitter or acquaintance. Bond says the man's mother owned the apartment.

The children were released around eight-30 a-m and the woman at around ten a-m.

    The man surrendered shortly afterward.

No injuries were reported and no shots were fired.

    Man in barricade situation surrenders

    February 25, 2007
    FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS

Four hostages, including three young children, have been released and the 19-year-old man who barricaded himself inside the apartment on the South Side Sunday morning has surrendered without incident, police said.

A 19-year-old man barricaded himself in an apartment at 74th Street and Bennett Avenue, according to police News Affairs Deputy Director Pat Camden. The initial call police received was of a man with a gun at that location, Camden said.

The incident began about 1 a.m. when the 19-year-old man got into a dispute with a resident as he was trying to gain access into the apartment building, police News Affairs Director Monique Bond said. He eventually got into the building and into the apartment where his mother lives. At which time, the armed man barricaded himself in the apartment with four other people.

The hostages included three of the man’s siblings, a set of fraternal twins, a boy and girl, believed to be about 5-years old, and an older female believed to be about 12-years old. A female babysitter was also taken hostage, Bond said.

SWAT teams were on the scene as of 6:30 a.m., Camden said.

About 8:30 a.m., the three young siblings were released, Bond said. As of 10 a.m., the babysitter was released and shortly after she was released the suspect surrendered without incident, Bond said.

No one was injured and no shots fired by suspect or police.

Police are still working to determine what drove the man to barricade himself in the apartment.
