    Man shot by police dies

A man, described by a relative as mentally ill, who was shot and wounded Wednesday by Chicago police after he was alleged to have threatened officers with a knife died Thursday in a city hospital, authorities said.

Raul Barrieras, 21, was shot once in the cheek about 5 p.m. Wednesday after police responded to his family's home on the 1600 block of North Tripp Avenue.

Barrieras was pronounced dead at 10:36 a.m. Thursday in Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to a Cook County medical examiner's office spokesman. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

Authorities had believed the man's wound was not life-threatening, and they were awaiting the results of the autopsy to see whether another cause contributed to his death, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

A police roundtable discussion, which includes the officers involved, witnesses and prosecutors, has determined that the officers acted "in accordance with state law and departmental guidelines," Bond said.

The man's grandmother, Justina Barrieras, 80, said her grandson was schizophrenic, but she described him as gentle and helpful when he was taking his medication. On Wednesday evening, the family called the police because he was acting out and they wanted to get him to a hospital, she said.

"My daughter called the police for them to help him, but he didn't want to go," Justina Barrieras said in a telephone interview. She said she did not witness the shooting but came down the stairs to find her grandson on the ground and police swarming around him.

Police spokesman Pat Camden said the man was armed with a knife when officers arrived and refused orders to drop the weapon. He told police, "[Taser] me or kill me," and a sergeant on the scene Tasered the man as he advanced with the knife, Camden said.

"He pulled the prongs right out of his chest. It had no effect on him," Camden said. "The sergeant Tasered him a second time because he continued to be menacing. He was advancing on the sergeant with a knife."

A police officer then shot the man, striking him once in the cheek, Camden said. As paramedics were taking the man to Illinois Masonic, they found another knife taped to his thigh, Camden said. The weapon was removed. No one else in the apartment and no officers were injured, he said.

Justina Barrieras said the family was at her grandson's bedside when he died. She said he was the "man of the house" since his older brother moved out, often cooking breakfast and dinner for the family and helping with groceries and chores.

"My poor grandson, he was the only one who helped me," she said, sobbing. "He helped me with everything, and now I have nobody."

Bond said that the officers did what was necessary to ensure their safety and get the man under control.

"When an officer is in a situation like that, they are not aware of the subject's medical history," Bond said. "They have to react."

How's the officer doing that was involved? Anyone trying to crucify him, yet?
