'Food Loaf' Helps Stop Food Fights In Jails
POSTED: 9:57 am PST March 2, 2007
BROOKVILLE, Pa. -- Jefferson County's jail warden got a little tired of inmates throwing food despite repeated warnings not to, so he fought back.
Warden David Riley recently started feeding misbehaving inmates a food loaf, made up of all the offerings at mealtime mixed together and formed into a loaf.
"We microwave the food loaf before it is served," Riley said. "It's really not that bad."
Jails across the country commonly serve food loafs as punishment for bad behavior. Some jails don't use the daily meal offerings, but instead use a recipe that includes ingredients like wheat bread, beans, other vegetables and cheeses in order to make sure the inmate's diet meets daily nutritional guidelines.
Five days after offering the unique concoction, Riley said all food throwing stopped at his jail.
"I had one inmate tell me, 'Well warden, you broke me,"' Riley said. "It has had the desired effect."
"Prison Loaf"
Special Management Meal
Yield - Three Loaves
6 slices whole wheat bread, finely chopped
4 ounces imitation cheddar cheese, finely grated
4 ounces raw carrots, finely grated
12 ounces spinach, canned, drained
2 cups dried Great Northern Beans, soaked,
cooked and drained
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
6 ounces potato flakes, dehydrated
6 ounces tomato paste
8 ounces powdered skim milk
4 ounces raisins
Mix all ingredients in a 12-quart mixing bowl. Make sure all wet items are drained. Mix until stiff, just moist enough to spread. Form three loaves in glazed bread pans. Place loaf pans in the oven on a sheet pan filled with water, to keep the bottom of the loaves from burning. Bake at 325 degrees in a convection oven for approximately 45 minutes. The loaf will start to pull away from the sides of the bread pan when done.

Food loaf is fairly popular in more rural Georgia Jails. I'm all for it. Don't like it? Don't show up!

Seriously? Why not just make this the regular meal?

In the jail I used to work in, the inmates used to make jailhouse burritos with items from the vending machine
It's been awhile, but I think it contained 2 beef sticks (chopped up), crushed cheetos, and the seasoning from a taco ramen noodle. They put the contents in the cheeto bag, put some water in it, and sealed it shut. Then they microwaved it, and let it sit for about 2 hrs.
They ended up with some sort of loaf.....thing.....nasty. They loved it.No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for ones friends - John 15:13

I'm with Rhino on the beatings for punishment, if you dont like what is served DONT COME BACK.
Sheriff Arpaio from MCSO has a good, no GREAT saying...
When the inmates complain about the heat in the 'tent city' he yells about OUR SOLDIERS in the DESERTS of IRAQ and they didnt commit any crimes.
I'm sure someone here can google that and get Arpaio's exact words, I dont do him any justice..
On a related note, when I went to Acatraz for vacation they said the food there was 5 star great. They didnt want to piss off the inmates so they gave them one good thing and that was food...A monday morning lunatic, disturbed from time to time. Temporary catatonic madman on occasion..
