Rock Star busted with 14 weapons hidden in car going 111 mph.

Rocker John Popper sings the blues after being busted near Ritzville

RITZVILLE, Wash. - 39-year-old John Popper of the popular band Blues Traveler was arrested nine miles east of Ritzville Tuesday for drug possession, after Washington State Patrol troopers stopped the vehicle he was traveling in for driving at excessive speeds.

Around 4:30 p.m., WSP stopped the black Mercedes SUV nine miles east of Ritzville after clocking the vehicle at 111 mph.

Initially the driver, 34-year-old Brian Gourgeois was initially placed under arrest for reckless driving. The passenger and registered owner of the vehicle, 39 year old John Popper, was placed under arrest for drug possession after troopers smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Gourgeois resides in Austin, TX and Popper lives in Snohomish, Washington.

A search by a K-9 unit revealed multiple hidden compartments in the vehicle. A total of 14 weapons, including four rifles (one of which was a 50 caliber rifle), nine handguns and a switchblade knife were recovered. Night vision goggles and a taser were also located in the vehicle. Popper told authorities he was a collector of weapons.

The vehicle was also equipped with flashing emergency headlights, a siren and external public address (PA) system. Popper said he had installed the items because in the event of a natural disaster he didn't want to be left behind.

Troopers also recovered a small amount of marijuana and a marijuana pipe. Popper and Gourgeois were booked into the Adams County Jail and will be charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Gourgeois faces an additional charge of reckless driving. The Spokane Regional Drug Task Force and the ATF have been called to assist in the investigation. DEA agents seized Popper's vehicle and he could face federal charges of possessing a vehicle with hidden compartments.

Hell, he's just got good taste in toys!

I wouldn't exactly call a pull out, padded drawer a "hidden compartment." I don't know about Washington's gun laws, but I did notice that the article stated he was booked into jail on the drug charge...no mention of weapons charges. And the DEA is going to collar him for the "hidden" compartments? Give me a break. Granted, that many weapons in a vehicle is pretty unusual. BUT, if every single one of them is legal, shame on the media, and shame on the police agency for letting the guy be painted as a drug-running gun nut. Just because the dude had a joint and several (possibly legal) guns in the vehicle doesn't make this a cartel bust.

You've heard Blues Traveler's music- whether you know it or not.

I agree with traffic. I'm not painting the guy to be a saint. Definitely foolish to have guns and drugs in the same car. But hardly news worthy.

But, he's an entertainer and so if he doesn't believe guns are evil, then he should be ousted.

Looks like there are more compartments than just a slide-out drawer for the rifles - that is just a picture that made it to the news.

Drugs, stupid. Reckless Driving, dumb. Emergency equipment, call it a poor choice (use of same could be illegal). If your going to be stupid enough to smoke a bowl and get caught driving like an ass in a car full of weapons... I guess he deserves whatever he gets.

If it were only the guns, assuming they are all legit, I don't see an issue. That big ass box doesn't look like a hidden compartment to me. If it were, my job would be a lot easier.

I'm impressed with his selection of toys though.

Don't forget the night vision goggles and the taser.

Anything over 99 in California and your vehicle gets impounded.

    I've always liked Blues Traveler.

Lesson learned? Don't do 111 when you have drugs in your car. Those weapons shouldn't have been seized. If it were my stop, seeing that they were all legally transported I wouldn't have taken them. I am not one of Richie Daley's (for those of you that don't know him he is our mayor , His father was a man this guy is just a piece of shit) little gun hating thugs. The only reason why it made the news is because he doesn't fit with the mainstream yuppie on the evilness of firearms.

Do we know for sure they are all legal? Maybe that's why they called in the ATF?

Just because they haven't charged on that yet, doesn't mean they aren't going to later.
