What does your department do with out of service vests? If you're not sure it might be something to look in to.

Bulletproof Vests Sent To Iraq By Local Departments

PAPILLION, Neb. -- The Sarpy County Sheriff's Department packed a truck with about 55 bulletproof vests bound for Iraq.

The vests have outlived their service life recommendation but still provide protection, according to Sgt. Bruce Meyer.

"The troops that are in Iraq can use them for sitting on in their Humvees, to wear in the compound. They just give them additional protection when they don't want to wear their 40- to 50-pound combat vests," Meyer said.

The vests were also collected from the Omaha Police Department. The vests will first go to Fort Riley before they are shipped out.
