Interstate full of CUCUMBERS!
Ok.....last night I worked a call on top of the Whiskey Bay bridge last night.(It's a bridge that's part of I 10 that runs between Lafayette, La and Baton Rouge, La from East to West) And when I say "on top" I mean the highest point of the bridge that is over a big body of water....The Whiskey Bay pilot Channel. We get calls up there all the time and continuously work MVA's, car fires, suicide jumpers, search and rescue, etc.
I can't really say it was "funny" because it WAS an MVA and they did have victims, but i can say it was a new one to me. And because no one got severely hurt I did smile about the situation. Originally we got a call to respond to the bridge for an MVA involving 3 vehicles. Two of which being 18 wheelers. One was carrying a truckload of CUCUMBERS! When I arrived on scene other LEO's taped off the scene and closed down the interstate. There were more cucumbers spilled all over the interstate in one spot than I have ever seen in my life. The scene smelled like a big oily salad.
We cleaned up the mess and reopened the interstate after 6 hours of it being shut down. It's amazing how much traffic can build up just after a few minutes of being stopped. So I'm sure you can imagine how much traffic built up after 6 hours. I later found out the traffic was bumper to bumper from Whiskey Bay in Louisiana allllllll the way to TEXAS! Now anyone driving east bound on I 10 from Lafayette area to Baton Rouge they will see a mile long trail of cucumbers off to the right shoulder.
Here is the news article from our news web site.....
A stretch of I-10 eastbound near milemarker 127 in Iberville parish was closed until 8:15 p.m. tonight due to two crashes which happened just after 3 p.m., according to Louisiana State Police
In the first crash, a red Ford Explorer was traveling below the posted speed limit and caused traffic to back up.
A black Peterbuilt tractor-trailer, driven by John Keays, 58, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, crashed into the back of a Ford F-350 hauling a camper trailer. Within several minutes a second crash occurred involving the tractor-trailer from the first crash.
The second crash was the result of a purple Freightliner tractor-trailer, which was hauling cucumbers, driven by Omar Denazvidez, 29, of McAllen, TX, crashing into the now stopped black Peterbuilt tractor-trailer.
After the impact, the Freightliner entered the left lane. The trailer split in two spilling its contents onto the roadway and the engine from the Freightliner was thrown onto the roadway spilling engine oil into both lanes of travel.
The driver of the F-350, Howard Kelley, 69, Frederick, CO, and Keays were not injured. Both refused medical attention at the crash scene.
Denazvidez sustained minor injuries and was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Baton Rouge General Mid-City location.
Keays and Denazvidez were both cited for careless operation. Seatbelts were used and impairment is not suspected to be a factor in either crash.
The roadway was completely closed as a result of cucumbers strewn across the roadway, the size of the vehicles, and the oil in the roadway."In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."

My In-laws were on there way back to Hattiesburg, MS from Texas and just happened to get off the interstate right before that happened. While they were at the gas station the workers told them about the pile up and told them how to go the back roads...

after i got finished working the call around 2130 the nearest gas station was FILLED with people filling up with gas. they were all asking questions and i heard many different stories on what happened. its funny how people can take one thing and turn it into something COMPLETELY different! all i could do was nod my head and smile.

I'm confused, as a police dispatcher you had to go to the scene?

Nope. Miss Foxxy also serves as a volunteer firefighter/first responder. She just can't get enough of this stuff.

Only in south Louisiana...I'm surprised that about half of the cucumbers didn't end up going home with some people.

OK, I got called out...
Yes, Foxxy and I shared this darling little scene together, we stood overlooking this sea of cucumbers, with the gentle south Louisiana breeze warmly whispering in our ears...
I looked down at her fondly... at her *mesmerizing* eyes, watched as the evening sun glinted off of her golden hair... and said...
"Ain't no damn way these were headed to a produce market.. too friggin' small... I bet they were going to the pickle factory. Anyway.. I wish the Goddamned lazy-assed highway department would friggin' show up to clean this shit up... Them sumbitches take forever..." Goddamn traffic's gonna be backed up to California if they don't."
I am such a flippin' romantic...

Countybear....the highway department did FINALLY show up but all they did was make a bigger mess for me to clean up with the fire hose. Spreading sand over oil spills is ok but.....when you spread it over oil AND cucumbers......it makes a mess that takes a while longer to clean up.
I had to put more pressure behind the hose so it would actually do something when we washed it down. Now there are sandy, oil covered cucumbers on the shoulder of the interstate. So if anyone's desparately hungry....you can go to mile marker 127 East in Iberville parish on interstate 10 in Louisiana, pick you a handfull of cucumbers, wash them off under the faucet and you're good to go!

Well, had we not been interrupted so rudely by the little matter of the armed illegal aliens trying to shoot the truck driver, we might have had time for beer, crown, coke, a room, and a game of hide the cucumber...

Had I been available (and not being filmed by the TV news screaming "GET ON THE F%^$@ING GROUND GOD D&*^@MIT! with my sidearm drawn), I would have put all the pressure on that hose that you needed...
omg.. sorry, couldn't resist...Last edited by countybear; 03-13-07 at 08:14 AM.

You know countybear....you left the scene to go get some gun happy aliens and I had to leave to go provide medical attention to a rubber-necker that couldn't tell there were miles of brake lights in front of her. So...as you know, once it starts on that damn bridge it becomes a domino effect! My question is....why when we are working one MVA does everyone else think they MUST see whats going on. I wish we could give citations to people just for being nosey!

Pretty awesome night, actually... Turns out my armed Honduran had forged identity documents on him. The best part of the collar was the search incident to arrest, wherein we found the business card of the guy who is forging ID's for illegals in the New Orleans area. The I.C.E. agent on call was drooling all over the phone for that...
