Minn Trooper Shot and Killed a motorist
(WCCO) Elk River, Minn. A state trooper shot and killed a motorist near Becker, Minn. on Saturday after the trooper was dragged by the suspect's vehicle during a traffic stop, authorities said.
Authorities didn't immediately release the name of either the trooper or the victim.
According to Sherburne County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Doran, the incident began around 2:18 p.m. with a cell phone call reporting a possible impaired driver on U.S. Highway 10 in Becker, about 20 miles southeast of St. Cloud.
A trooper, assisted by a sheriff's deputy, found the vehicle a few minutes later on Sherburne County Road 11 just north of Highway 10. The trooper pulled the green SUV over and approached the driver, who sped off.
"During the course of the traffic stop, the vehicle fled the scene, dragging the trooper. During this part of the incident the trooper fired his duty weapon at the subject," said Capt. Steve Doran of the Sherburne County Sheriff's Department.
According to Doran, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the suspect's vehicle, and the trooper suffered minor injuries, Doran said.
The trooper's name and details of his career with the Minnesota State Patrol will be released Sunday afternoon. Until then, he's been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
"This is an incident we take very seriously and, unfortunately, its something we never want to see our people go through," said Lt. Mark Peterson.
Investigators are still looking at whether or not the driver was actually impaired. Neighbors say Sheriff deputies combed a half-mile area of Highway 11 and dogs were brought in to sniff for evidence. Authorities will not say yet where the suspect was hit or how many shots were fired.
