Granddaughter of NASCAR founder arrested for impersonating a Deputy

BOCA RATON — The granddaughter of NASCAR cofounder Edgar Otto was arrested on a charge of impersonating a sheriff's deputy Tuesday after she pulled over a driver on Clint Moore Road, ordered him out of his car and handcuffed him, police said.

A Boca Raton police community service officer saw Rachel Lyndsee Otto, 21, stopped with two other cars in the 3000 block of Clint Moore Road at about 4 p.m. and, believing that a wreck had just occurred, pulled up, according to a police report.

Getting out of the car, he mistook Otto, who has close-cropped hair and was wearing military fatigues, for a man, and listened while Otto told him she was an off-duty deputy for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Otto said she was making an arrest and asked the community service officer to call for "94," a police code for backup, while she waited for her unit to arrive.

The community service officer saw a handcuffed Michael Mellin leaning against the back of a black Ford Mustang.

Stopped nearby was another man in a silver Honda, who said he had helped the sheriff's deputy pull over Mellin by boxing him in on Clint Moore Road.

The community service officer asked Otto for identification, whereupon she took the cuffs off Mellin.

When a Boca Raton police officer showed up, he recognized Otto, who has been arrested at least nine times since 2004, and listened as she explained she was making a citizen's arrest for road rage.

The officer quizzed the man in the silver Honda, who said he was convinced he was helping a man from the sheriff's office make an arrest.

The officer then turned to a woman sitting in the passenger seat of Otto's gray BMW. The woman told the officer she had been living for the past week with Otto, whom she thought was a man, the report said.

She said Otto had gotten angry at Mellin after he had cut her off while driving on Clint Moore Road.

Just to be sure, the officer called a sheriff's office dispatcher, who assured him Otto wasn't a deputy.

He arrested her on impersonating an officer and false arrest charges and turned her over to the Palm Beach County Jail, where she was being held without bond.
