Man gets 4 to 10 years for spitting at officer

Steven Peek, charged with spitting last June at his probation officer during a hearing, was sentenced today to four to 10 years in prison -- a punishment more stringent than suggested in sentencing guidelines.

Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey A. Manning explained his reasoning:

Mr. Peek, evaluated by a doctor, was said to be narcissistic beyond the point of rehabilitation.

He'd shown as much in the sentencing proceeding, during which he represented himself, and forced two witnesses through 20 minutes of nonsensical questioning.

And, Judge Manning reasoned, because Mr. Peek was unlikely to be reformed by the criminal justice system, he instead should be "incapacitated."

Mr. Peek, a sex offender, has a history of crime and violence. During a hearing last June, he cursed and spit at county probation officer Karen Ollis after a judge revoked his probation and ordered him to be taken into custody.
