FORT WORTH – The mother of an 8-month-old Richland Hills boy who was found to have methamphetamine in his system said Monday she is addicted to drugs and used meth the day the baby became ill.

But Whitney Walker says she doesn't know how her son might have ingested drugs, and police said Monday they are trying to determine how the boy swallowed methamphetamine. The infant was taken to a Fort Worth hospital on Thursday and tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, nicotine and caffeine, police said.

Ms. Walker, 21, who is six months pregnant with her third child, said she took the baby to the hospital Thursday afternoon because he was unresponsive.

She said she used methamphetamine on Thursday – hours before the baby became ill. However, she denies exposing the child.

"I don't think I have a bad drug problem," Ms. Walker said before a custody hearing Monday. "I love my kids. I will do anything to get them back. I'll go to class. I'll stay clean. I'll go to church. I can get away from the drug."

Her son – who was released from the hospital on Saturday – and her 22-month-old daughter are in the custody of Child Protective Services.

No charges have been filed, and investigators have talked to an uncle who was visiting the family at their home in the 3100 block of Rufe Snow Drive, said Richland Hills Detective Tye Bell.

Also Monday, a Tarrant County family law judge said that Ms. Walker's two children would remain temporarily in CPS custody.

CPS spokeswoman Marissa Gonzales said the children are in separate foster homes now but the agency wants to place them together.

"We do have the names of a couple of relatives, and we always try to place with family members," Ms. Gonzales said. "We will try to unite them [both children]."

Police said the baby was in the care of his mother and grandmother before he was taken to the hospital.

"It has to be accidental," said Janna Beau, the boy's grandmother, who said the baby was in good condition when she looked after him. "I would never do anything to hurt those babies."

i do hope they put the children together in a stable, drug free home, and do regular house checks on them.
The mom shouldnt even have another chance at custody of those kids, she should have thought about class, church, whatever before she decided to take the steps she did.
now this unborn child will probably be born with sometype of defects because of her actions.

Whats "funny" is now that she has been caught she says she will do whatever to keep the children. Until she got caught she didnt think of doing any of that. All those children needs to be taken away and make her get fixed so she cant have any more, EVER!

One thing that exposes the worst of meth, is the kids found in drug houses, and meth houses with clandestine labs and kids. Teachers and school counselors often know who these kids are, but are frustrated by administrators who are cowards, that cite "privacy" or "liability." for doing nothing. Mandatory reporting laws, and reminders of that "duty to report" need to become reality to some, i.e. the occasional arrest, provided PC is there.

Suggest we all review our State mandatory reporting laws.

Many Drug Task Forces have included selected CPS Caseworkers or local Health Authority Officers in their post-raid on scene investigations. If there are children known to be present, it is noted in the warrant and plan. Once the scene is secured, the kids are placed into protective custody by the LEO. The CPS and Health Officers, in haz-mat gear if necessary, serve the initial paperwork on the so-called "parent" present at the scene or at the jail, and remove the kids to a hosptal for medical exam, evidence, and decontamination, and then to a safe house. CPS and Health then coordinate with the DTF/police evidence collection team to determine if the bodies of the kids, their clothing, bedding, food, and toys are contaminated with dope, i.e. methamphetamine, meth lab pre-cursors or residues. They often collect their own evidence and photos, and process it separately. I never had a problem with this as long as we (LE) collected evidence and standards from the same referenced source/areas. The filth, dog (and human) crap, rotten food, or lack of food, and indications of physical or sexual abuse and neglect are also recorded and added to criminal charges. This builds the parallel civil action for the state or couny to terminate parental rights.

CPS and Health on-scene gets their agencies directly involved. There are a lot (most) of dedicated CPS and Health workers. They want to get out where it's real, but frustrated by managers more interested in committee meetingss, politix, and who prefer to Monday morning quarterback from a comfy office. After the warrant is served, it helps to invite their management, some with only political/academc credentials, who have never got their hands dirty, for a refresher course on why they draw a paycheck. If the social service management shows up, they become part of the solution (group hug). If they snivel out, they remain part of the problem. Somehow the press seems to find out.....

Dopers are filthy and meth-heads lead the way. They have degenerated into the intellect zone of some lower animals, or plant life. Tweakers usually respond to only 2 stimuli - (1) the presence of dope, or (2) the absence of dope and need to get more dope.
