Family: Surgery While Awake Caused Suicide

    http://www.nbc5i.com/health/11603077/detail.html

Women Sue Anesthesia Firm After Death

    POSTED: 8:05 am CDT April 10, 2007

Studies say that up to 40,000 surgery patients a year are left awake but paralyzed during surgery.

Two West Virginia women say that experience caused their father to commit suicide.

Sherman Sizemore, a former coal miner and Baptist minister, killed himself in February 2006, two weeks after undergoing abdominal surgery. A lawsuit alleges Sizemore was awake for nearly 30 minutes of his surgery.

The women said this experience left their father so upset he took his own life.

Experts said people who've suffered from so-called anesthesia awareness are frequently distressed, even suffering from post-traumatic stress.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from Raleigh Anesthesia Associates. There was no immediate comment from the company.

    Nothing makes you kill yourself.

Not everyone responds to meds the same way, some people even have a resistance to them.

I think they did a study that found redheads seem to need higher levels then most to put them under.

I don't think it made him kill himself either, but that would sure screw someone's head up real good.

Somtimes that's not true. I'm a redhead and last time I had surgery, after it was over, it took over nine hours for me to come out of it. In fact my family not knowing anything was wrong left the hospital because I wouldn't wake up and was boring.

I actually woke up from surgery once... I was just getting my wisdom teeth extracted in the hospital for insurance & chicken reasons, since they use general anesthesia.

All I remember about it was the doctor saying "He's awake! He's awake!, and the next thing I remember was seeing lights as they were rushing me down to X-Ray, and it took about five of them to stand me up in front of the X-Ray machine.... I had no idea what for, it was all just a fog. That's the last I remember.

I found out later that I had woke up, vomited a little, and sucked it back into my lungs, so they were trying to figure out how much I had sucked in. I had a little pneumonia from it, but that's about the extent of my wake-up experiences.

My other three surgeries went fine.

Almost completely off topic : I went with nitrous oxide when I got my wisdom teeth pulled. Did all four at once, entangled roots and all, didn't hurt. I know they call it laughing gas, but I still find it funny the doc was using Craftsmen needle nose pliers. *ahem, completely off topic now* Anyway, I'd suggest that route, personally.

As I understand it the pain is exceptional in some of these cases, even worse than...most anything...since the body can't react as normal by releasing endomorphines. Add to that you're paralyzed, unable to express yourself in any way and it, well, to understate it in the extreme, it can't be nice.

I can certainly understand how it would be a very traumatic and haunting experience.

Which doesn't mean I support these daughters trying to cash in on their father's misery. If true, the anesthesiologist left him suffering alone for 30 minutes. What were they doing to help his suffering those two weeks?
