Gunman 'shot at police officers'

A gunman tried to kill three police officers who were keeping him under surveillance, the Old Bailey has heard.
Dean Stanbury "let rip" with a semi-automatic pistol, hitting one of them in the shoulder, a jury was told.
One officer was shot at outside a school, terrifying parents who were collecting their children, it was said.

Mr Stanbury, 21, from Leytonstone, east London, denies three counts of attempted murder and an alternative charge of wounding with intent.

Showing "considerable courage", officers pursued Stanbury as he tried to make off, said Simon Mayo, prosecuting.

At one point the gunman was "letting rip" with his gun as he tried to kill those in pursuit, it was alleged.

'Shocking and violent'

Stanbury showed "complete disregard, not only for the lives of the officers who were going about their duty but also for the safety of members of the public", it was claimed.

He had been under surveillance when the shooting took place in Leytonstone in June last year.

"His reaction to discovering that he was being watched was both shocking and violent in the extreme," Mr Mayo said.

"He drew and fired repeatedly at the undercover officers with a 9mm self-loading handgun, attempting thereby to shoot them dead."

The trial is continuing.

Not in London they aren't. The Armed Response cars will be at most calls within 5 minutes, sometimes quicker in the more crime ridden areas, which have more cars patrolling.

Five minutes is way too long to be shot at with no means of returning the favor, imho...

I'd agree IF we had the numbers of Officers that are fired at as the USA does. It is still a very rare occurrence here. Just look at the number of 'Officer Down' posts.

Despite all the press coverage of 'gun crime' in the UK it rarely involves police officers.

I bet when this guy was 14 he was issued a shotgun permit, thats why he was such a good shot and why he had a gun. You had given him a license to kill, see its all your fault.

I had the oppotunity to do a ride along with an Armed Response Car back in 94 when I was on a training trip to the Metropolitan PD.....some of the most intense response driving I've ever been involved in over 20 years.

We may have met then. And yes Response driving in London is quite a laugh.

Most shootings I've ever heard about here happen before police are even called...

But I'd be lying if I said officer-involved shootings here are rare - I hear about at least one or two in Dallas nearly every week. Usually the cops win
