    An Absolute Tragedy

Teen's slaying may be gang-related, cops say
DRIVE-BY | Accepted into Job Corps, he's shot on N.W. Side

George Luis Carrasquillo's life was supposed to be looking up with his acceptance Friday into the Job Corps training program, relatives said.

Now they are making funeral arrangements for the 15-year-old, who was gunned down at 7:30 a.m. Friday in a drive-by shooting as he rode his bike with a cousin at Fullerton and Pulaski.

"He just got accepted -- the day he got in [Job Corps] was the day he died," said his cousin Daniella Rivera.

Friends and relatives wept Friday morning as they lifted Carrasquillo's blue Diamondback bicycle from the sidewalk outside the CVS drugstore where he collapsed.

The murder weapon was not recovered. However, detectives found a gun that they think was carried by the victim, police said. Tests were being conducted to see whether it was fired. Shell casings from two different weapons were found at the scene, police said.

"Right now, we think it's a gang conflict where both sides are shooting," Police Supt. Phil Cline said.

When asked about the attack happening in daylight at such a busy corner, Cline said: "It's gangs -- when they see members of rival gangs and they're armed, they're going to shoot at each other, no matter what time of day it is."

Carrasquillo's mother, Josefina, wilted with grief at an anti-gang rally Friday afternoon at the shooting scene. She said her son wasn't in a gang and that he hadn't reported that anyone had threatened him. "He was very good," she said.

She shook her head and said, "No, no," when told Cline said her son was carrying a gun when he was killed.

"This is something that escalated the day before,'' said Angel Ramirez of the Gangs to Grace Ministry, who visited the corner. "The day before yesterday, they [gang members] were going at it at Kostner and Armitage, Cobras and Eagles. They were fighting."

"At this hour, they [his assailant or assailants] must have known his route,'' said Orlando Cintron, with the group CeaseFire.

Carrasquillo, of the 3500 block of West Belden, was the middle child in his family, relatives said. He had attended Schurz High School and Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School, the secondary school in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, according to the Chicago Board of Education.

Police at Friday afternoon's anti-gang rally said a car parked in the CVS lot would be examined because it might contain additional evidence. The vehicle, believed to belong to a CVS staffer, might have been struck by a bullet, officers said.

I am sure he was a shining star that offered all the good services he could to his community, including narcotics sales and not limited to tagging and burglary to autos.

Because as we all know us Chicago Police Officers have a plethora of firearms that we keep in our pockets and plant on 15 years old kids that were coming home from job corps, riding their bikes, with out their gang colors on, and plant them on their dead bodies for no reason at all. Gimme a break.
