    The (s)Lumber Co.

    Tony Tye, Post-Gazette

There is no truth to the rumor that Joe Hardy supplied lumber to Noah as he was building his ark ("Noah, we can send out the 300 cubits of plywood today, but we can't deliver the nails until next week"), but the fact is that Joe is still pretty old. The founder of the 84 Lumber empire turned 84 in January, throwing himself a birthday party attended by just about everybody who is anybody (The Morning File's invitation was apparently lost in the mail).

You may have heard that Joe married 22-year-old Kristin Georgi, an employee at the Hardy family's resort, over the weekend, right after he woke up from his nap. That would make the thrice-wed Hardy, let's see, 3.8 times older than his young bride, who wasn't even born when "Ghostbusters" came out.

    A cautionary tale ... ?

This brings to mind the story of a young stripper and aspiring Guess jeans model, Vickie Lynn Hogan, better known to the free world as Anna Nicole Smith. In June of 1994, Smith, at age 26, married an oil billionaire named J. Howard Marshall, who was 89 and fairly covered with liver spots at this point. He died 13 months later, touching off a protracted legal fight over his $1.6 billion estate. She went on to gain a bunch of weight, lose a bunch of weight, then die of something or other, at a casino or on the toilet or while eating a ham sandwich maybe. America was captivated.

    ... or love most Nobel?

You might think that such wide age gaps are the province of flamboyant billionaires and tripped-out Playboy models. Maybe this will change your mind: Chen Ning Yang won the Nobel Prize for physics back in 1957. Something about elementary particles and statistical mechanics and weak-force asymmetry. You can see why he won the prize, just for knowing what those terms mean, and we can safely conclude that as a physicist he was neither a billionaire nor flamboyant. His marriage to his first wife lasted five decades, producing two children, but after her death in 2003, he proposed to and married a 28-year-old master's student. He was 82 at the time.

This marriage escaped the notice of the American media, because it did not involve A) a nubile young supermodel or b) a hugely bloated former supermodel, but to the Chinese newspapers it was a big deal. Just get a load of this righteous dose of outrage, from the China Daily: "Yang was deeply impressed by Weng's considerate character, savvy and excellent command of English. Weng was then a freshman of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. The two re-established contact in February and then fell in love with each other."

OK, not the best example of righteous outrage. Maybe more of a quiet outrage.
A monday morning lunatic, disturbed from time to time. Temporary catatonic madman on occasion..

Lightning crashes a new mother cries, her placenta falls to the floor. The angel opens her eyes, the confusion sets in before the doctor can even close the door..
