How little They care.
Police body condemn early release
Scottish Police Federation members have called for early release policies to be reviewed after a man who stabbed a policewoman was released from jail.
Martin Wood was locked up for 12 months for the attack on Tayside officer Pc Shirley Tindal in Dundee.
But it has emerged that Wood had been released after serving 17 weeks of his sentence.
The Tayside branch of the SPF said the judiciary needed to reconsider its early release policies. Sgt Malcolm Gibbs, branch secretary, said: "It is very rare for us to comment on a sentence, but we have to try and reduce the number of assaults on police officers".
"One way to do this is to send out a strong message to the public that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated."
He added: "Someone being released after serving only four months of a year-long prison sentence is sending out entirely the wrong message and belittling the force.
"Our officers deserve more protection. Early release systems need to be reconsidered."
Wood, 35, attacked police officers when they were called to his home in the Lochee area of Dundee last year.
During a struggle, the civil servant stabbed Pc Tindal on the head.
Sgt Gibbs, who has been a serving police officer for 26 years, said it was "sheer chance" that the officer had not received more serious injuries.
"We police the streets with the consent of the vast majority," he added. "It is only right that officers should do so in the knowledge that they are considered worthy of the full protection of the law in the event of an assault." A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) said they did not comment on individual cases. To be born an Englishman, is to be a winner in the Lottery of Life.

If you are looking for the public in general to thank us, Trojan, you got another thing coming. Heck, that is why most of us are on this forum in the first place. Sometimes there is justice, sometimes there is just us.

Nothing to do with the public though. Just the pathetic legal system we have here. I hope the local police still work like I used to in the 'old days'.

Judges around the world cater to public consensus. If the public started making statements about where the line was to be drawn, the Judiciary would listen. Unfortunately, in this day and age our public wants to not be responsible for their actions and wants someone to blame for all their problems. Someone who can take the heat off of what they do. Enter police, stage right. The end result of that is, like in this officers case, we get worse treatment than any victim should ever have to deal with. Some fool out there decided that because we are cops, we should, for some reason, be willing and able to take and deal with more abuse than the average man (or woman). That we do not care or remember when we are stabbed or shot or spat at or sworn at. That the next day when that same individual who spat on us or swore at us has a call for service, we respond and treat them as if nothing had ever happened. That if someone swears at us, it is "just part of our job". If someone threatens us or our family, then we "should have realized that police have to deal with such things". If someone stabs us, it is "because they were scared of what the police were going to do to them". S'okay, though. I love my job.
Why the heck would we want to use crossbows and ride horseback???

get a gun.
good luck i have yet to see any court from were i have been shot at, struck by vehicle , or any other various ways assaulted. officers as victims seem to get dropped out of the systems. but if we fight back it's police brutality.

I think I would moreso question the Judge and prosecution of this case... a 12 month sentence for stabbing a cop in the head? Attempted First Degree Murder of a Police Officer? Outrageous.
Its as if the courts are intentionally provoking attacks against police.Last edited by countybear; 05-10-07 at 12:43 PM.
