Sheriff: Shooting that killed 3 began after gunman called 'crazy'

A gunman who killed two people at a construction site started shooting after one of the men called him crazy, Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said.

The shooter, 51-year-old James Forrest Mobley, was an electrical subcontractor from Port Royal. He got into an argument Thursday with Rolando Matta, 37, a painting subcontractor from Mexico, about when their crews would be able to work,Tanner said.

The general contractor, 66-year-old Grady Boseman of Jasper, Ga., noticed Matta's crew wasn't working. When Matta explained he was having problems with Mobley, Boseman responded: "Don't worry about him, he's crazy," according to Tanner.

Mobley then grabbed a pistol from his lunch pail and shot Boseman eight times and Matta six times before walking to the back of the building and shooting himself once in the head, the sheriff said.

Mobley had a concealed weapons permit, Tanner said.

Crews were building a retail store on the site along U.S. 278, authorities said.
