One more cop killer burns in hell tonight
Texas Carries Out 14th Execution Of The Year
(May 16, 2007)—Texas Death row inmate Charles Smith was executed Wednesday evening in Huntsville for the 1988 slaying of a sheriff's deputy.
Smith was the 14th condemned prisoner put to death this year in the nation's busiest capital punishment state.
Smith and another convict escaped from a Kansas prison and headed to Texas, stealing trucks, breaking into homes in Houston and swiping credit cards, jewelry and a gun.
They gassed up their stolen van in Bakersfield and drove off without paying when Pecos County Sheriff's Deputy Tim Hudson tried to stop them.
Hudson was driving alongside the van on Interstate 10 near Fort Stockton when his car was hit by at least three gunshots from Charles Smith's pistol.
One shot fatally wounded the 61-year-old deputy.
The US Supreme Court Monday declined to review Smith's case.
His cousin and fellow prison fugitive, Carroll Smith, pleaded guilty in the case and received a life prison term.
When I heard this on the radio tonight, they listed the final meal he requested, and the fact that he declined to say any last words. All I could think about was the deputy who didn't get to order a fancy last meal, and didn't have any opportunity to say good-bye to his family. I wish we could come up with something less humane than execution to deal with these people."I'm not a coward,

I have never understood how this is "cruel and unusual". Compared to what the victim got, this is way too warm and fuzzy.

You know, if they fry them, we could probably just hold the jiffy pop over him at that right time, let him do at least one useful thing with his life. Just make sure they use some nonstick cooking spray on the chair, hose it off and presto! ready for the next customer. Although electric bleachers would be more efficient.

Why does Texas make such a big production out of this enterprise of a life for a life... It's a complete waste of money that could be spent for rehabilitation.
They'd save all that money by just letting a few volunteers line him up against the wall and put a few 25 cent bullets in his head - We wouldn't even have to use the expensive bullets. The cheap bulk-pack stuff would do
