15 year old boy urinates in a ketchup dispenser at school

A sophomoric prank put a 15-year-old Valhalla boy in a legal pickle after he was arrested for allegedly urinating into a ketchup dispenser in the Valhalla Middle/High School cafeteria.

Mount Pleasant Police Chief Louis Alagno said the 10th-grader was arrested Thursday as a juvenile delinquent. He faces a misdemeanor charge of second-degree tampering with a consumer product, after being questioned by Detective Martin Greenberg, the department's youth officer.

The teen, whose name is being withheld by The Journal News because of his age, was released without bail to his parents and the case was referred to Family Court.

Interviewed at his home yesterday, the boy was full of remorse.

"I'm extremely sorry for what happened,'' said the boy. "I don't know what came over me. I guess I was just trying to impress my friends. I feel very embarrassed and ashamed. It was the dumbest thing I ever did.''

The incident apparently occurred at the end of the first high school lunch period Tuesday and was discovered near the end of the day by Principal Jonathan Thomas and Christine Ackerman, assistant principal for student affairs.

Schools Superintendent Diane Ramos-Kelly would not say how the apparent prank was discovered or discuss specifics of the incident, citing confidentiality rules.

It was not known whether any of the 200 students in the cafeteria during the second lunch period ingested the tainted ketchup. All condiment dispensers were replaced with sealed individual packets the next day.

Ramos-Kelly said that the incident was immediately reported to police and the Westchester County Health Department on Tuesday and that a letter to parents was sent home Wednesday.

"The Board of Health has advised us that urine is a sterile fluid and one would not expect adverse health reactions," the letter said. It said parents should consult their doctor if their child exhibits signs of nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

The boy said that, in addition to his arrest, he had been suspended from school for five days. Ramos-Kelly would not confirm that, saying only that the matter "is being taken very seriously'' and that the district "will take appropriate disciplinary action against any student or students found to be involved.''

After school yesterday, some students said they laughed when they heard about the incident while others were disgusted and concerned for anyone who may have used the tainted ketchup.

"When the teacher read the note being sent home people were laughing,'' said Frankee Lepore, a seventh-grader. "But myself and others thought it was really disgusting.''

"To play a joke is one thing, but to do something like this is sad,'' said his mother, Angela Lepore. "It could get all the other students sick. Thank God my kids don't buy lunch.''

The boy's mother said yesterday that she had written a letter of apology to the school.

"Personally, I feel very, very bad. I know that he didn't do it to be mean - he didn't intend to hurt anyone," she said.
