Cop recieves a "not-so-happy" meal, sues McDonalds.

Iowa police officer sues McDonald's over alleged 'mucousy' substance in sandwich
    The Associated Press
    Related: Dining Out More Safely

CHARLES CITY, Iowa A police officer who claims his chicken sandwich was slimed by two teenage employees at a McDonald's restaurant is suing the fast food company.

Officer Josh Douglas said he was working nights two years ago and went through the McDonald's drive-thru in Charles City. He ordered a chicken sandwich, which came with lettuce and tomato.

Not liking vegetables, Douglas said he went to remove the toppings and discovered what he described as a mucousy substance holding them together.

"Fortunately, I don't like lettuce. Because if I did I would have at least taken one bite before I realized what was the matter," he said.

Douglas and another officer went inside the restaurant, where they found two teenagers working. The employees said they were imitating a prank in a movie in which a state trooper orders a burger and the cook spits phlegm on it.

Both boys were fired and one of them later apologized to Douglas, records show.

Douglas and his attorney, Joel Yunek, say they have negotiated with McDonald's for more than a year but have been unable to reach a settlement. They filed a lawsuit on May 8 in Floyd County District Court.

Yunek said they aren't looking "for the world."

"But certainly ... he is deserving of an apology. Certainly, he is deserving of some kind of compensation," Yunek said.

Douglas said it's not about money but about accountability and to ensure the restaurant takes measures to ensure their employees are handling food properly...

Why are they suing McDonalds? - McDonald's didn't do it!!!

I would think that police officers would file criminal charges against the teens and sue their parents, not go after the deep pockets.

Those officers were done wrong, but suing the company rubs me the wrong way - that punishes the Shareholders, not the delinquents who did it.

I normally wouldn't like this, and the officers reasons for going for money are kind of shady. But personally I hope McDonalds has to pay out the ass for it. A big cash payout from them might make McDonalds, and other fast food joints, take this seriously and take greater measures to ensure their employees arn't doing this. I am personally sick of having to pick certain places to eat at work out of fear of this kinda things because both the employees and managers are shitbags. Liability and fear of getting sued makes corperations fix things a lot faster than laws do.

I think the officer SHOULD go for a big cash payout, but donate the money to a Police Charity if he wins. That way he sends a message that he is doing it do solve the problem and not to line his own pockets.

I have about a dozen links from another website about Police getting shit in their food. K9 cop in NYPD got GLASS, Cop in Iowa got METH, etc.

    I think that the officer should and needs to sue McNASTYS too, its all part of the chain of command type thing. { I know its not a command thing but I cant think of the proper term}

I think it's entirely appropriate to sue the corporation, and the franchisee (if it's not corporate run.)

They are responsible for the quality of the product, and food handling procedures should be paramount. That means that everyone receives training, and understands consequences.

Where/what are the charges against the teens?

A lawsuit against McDonalds is going to stop teens from being stupid? Not in the least. All that does is "send the message" that if you spit in a cop's food you'll lose your fast food job (oh the horror) and the consequences will be passed along to your former employer.

Sure, McDonalds should, and does, train employees how to handle food. But how do they guarantee untainted food? The lawsuit accomplishes nothing other than supporting this litigious society's lawyer full employment program.

I work at McDonalds, and I don't know about other restaurants, but at mine, that would be completely impossible unless EVERYONE on the entire shift was in on it, including the manager.

How old would the supervisor have to be before you could guarantee that they wouldn't be involved in or ignoring this kind of thing? People of all ages are assholes.

Unless McDonald's was to start doing full background checks on employees, and paying about $20 an hour to retain decent people, there's nothing they can do to prevent their employees from doing this sort of thing. And then of course, there would be no McDonald's to eat at at all.

I think that is the point right there. It is also why I don't eat at our McD's. I have arrested or dealt with 90% og the people working there. Not worth my health.

    1) Deciding who to sue for an adulterated burger should not be in retaliation from a bad guys suing Departments or Cities for b.s. charges - Just like you wouldn't arrest an innocent person because the last person made you mad.

    2) I'm not a McDonald's' shareholder (except maybe indirectly, if it's part of a mutual fund I own). But I'm saying that McDonald's is very likely NOT at fault - They work hard to maintain their corporate image of a wholesome place to eat, as do their insurance companies, and probably have very strict policies about handling food.

If a rogue employee, or several of them, decide that they hate cops and get together to contaminate their food, I GURANTEE that McDonald's' management would fire them on the spot for breaking corporate policy and health food laws if they knew that was going on, but how do you propose that they uncover that? I'm sure the employee isn't gonna do something like that untill the manager isn't looking.

There is no doubt in my mind that these are not the cream of the crop as employees go, but you can't get the cream of the crop for $6 an hour, and many of these people are teens with no work history and sealed records. How are they supposed to do anything with that sort of background? A fast-food restaurant cannot survive paying its employees $20 an hour to get better employees with a long work history and no blemishes on their record, or have an overseer that watches every move any employee makes - is just economic reality, just like your Sargent can't watch every move you make.

Even if McDonald's' looses, I'm not sure what they can do that they're probably not already doing - Except to prevent the food handlers from being able to see the customer who is getting the hamburger they're preparing, and have all communication between them and the cashier limited to computer cash register, period. I'm not sure that would be practical.

One option to avoid this is to go into the fast food joint or restaurant in most McDonalds, burger king, subway etc you can see the items being prepared and see the racks of those that have been pre done and so would reduce the chances of any malicious contamination.

So don't be lazy get out of the car walk into the place and even speak to people

Or just take a packed meal from home.
